According to the British Embassy in Vietnam, from April 1, Vietnam officially allows the export of fresh seafood from the UK to the market, with an estimated value of 20 million pounds within 5 years.

With this policy, Vietnamese consumers will have the opportunity to enjoy high-quality and abundant fresh seafood products from the UK with world-famous flavors and quality such as lobster, brown crab, etc.

The Shellfish Association of Great Britain (SAGB) estimates that access to the Vietnamese market is estimated to bring around £20 million to the UK seafood industry over the next five years.

Seafood exports from the UK to Vietnam have grown strongly in recent years.

Vietnam is currently the market with the highest per capita seafood consumption in Southeast Asia at about 37kg/person/year.

Allowing fresh British seafood to access the Vietnamese market will contribute to economic growth and promote effective trade cooperation between the two countries.

Through dialogue and cooperation with competent state agencies in Vietnam, the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the UK Department for Business and Trade (DBT) have successfully negotiated and introduced UK standards on fishing and seafood production to Vietnam.

Daniel Zeichner, UK Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said the market access agreement demonstrates the UK's commitment to boosting UK exports by helping businesses access potential international markets.

Meanwhile, David Jarrad, chief executive of the British Shellfish Association, said the opening of another market was great news for the seafood industry and showed there was strong global demand for fresh shellfish from the UK.

UK Government agencies will work closely with businesses and the British Seafood Association to effectively cooperate in trade, connecting Vietnamese importers with UK businesses through potential opportunities.

According to DEFRA, seafood exports from the UK to Vietnam have grown strongly, with output of fresh, frozen and processed products in the first nine months of 2024 increasing by 40% compared to the same period in 2023.
