On the morning of November 14th, the Industry and Trade Newspaper will organize a seminar titled "EU Anti-Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) – What preparations have Vietnamese businesses made for the implementation date?"
The EU's anti-deforestation regulation was adopted by Parliament on June 29, 2023, and was scheduled to come into effect in December 2024 for large businesses and from June 30, 2025, for small and medium-sized enterprises. However, on October 2, 2024, the body announced a proposal to postpone the implementation of the regulation. Under the new plan, the regulation will begin to be enforced in January 2025 for large businesses.
The range of goods produced and regulated by this Regulation includes: livestock, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soybeans, timber, and certain products derived from the aforementioned goods. Under the Regulation, any operator or trader bringing these goods into or exporting them from the EU market must demonstrate that the products do not originate from recently deforested land or contribute to forest degradation.
The regulations aim to address deforestation, forest degradation, and forest conservation to reduce carbon emissions and biodiversity loss.
Among the product groups subject to the regulations on deforestation, Vietnam has three main affected groups: wood, rubber, and coffee. Coffee is the most affected, accounting for 55% of export revenue, approximately over $1.1 billion; followed by wood ($636 million); and rubber ($252 million).
Since the EU's Anti-Deforestation Regulation was adopted, Vietnam has actively prepared and is ready to meet its requirements. However, many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the country are still facing difficulties in meeting the regulations' requirements. Some businesses are still unfamiliar with the regulations and lack the resources to implement effective management systems.
