The situation is reversed for Partey at Arsenal

Thomas Partey, who was expected to leave Arsenal on a free transfer this summer, was unexpectedly offered a contract extension by manager Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal are negotiating to keep the Ghanaian midfielder for another 2 years.

At 31, Partey is entering the final stages of his contract with Arsenal. Previously, many sources confirmed that he would leave this summer. However, his classy performances in recent months have made Arteta reconsider.

According to The Athletic , Partey is not only happy with his situation at Arsenal but also has a stable family life in London. In that context, Arsenal are willing to extend the contract for another 2 years or sign a 1-year contract with an option to extend for another 12 months if Partey is in good form.

In an injury-ravaged Arsenal season, Partey has been used flexibly by Arteta in different positions such as right-back and centre-back, replacing Ben White at the start of the season and more recently filling the void left by Gabriel.

It is Partey's versatility and class that has seen him become a key part of Arteta's strongest squad this season, with 45 appearances in all competitions.

In Arsenal's 3-0 win over Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, if it weren't for Declan Rice's superb free-kick, Partey would have been completely deserving of the Man of the Match award.

Partey's importance was underlined by the frustrated reactions from Arteta and Declan Rice when he was suspended for the Champions League semi-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain due to yellow card accumulation.

When asked about Partey's contract situation, Arteta replied vaguely: "It is true that there is progress with all the players, but I leave that to the sporting director Andrea Berta and the club."
