The WHO announcement said that the eastern region of the above African country is facing violence and security instability, seriously affecting the process of public health care.
In a statement, the UN health agency assessed that the DRC's health system was under pressure due to outbreaks of diseases, including yellow fever, cholera and malaria, which have re-emerged following recent natural disasters.
WHO says 7.4 million people in the Democratic Republic of Congo need medical assistance. “The entire health system in the Democratic Republic of Congo is at an alarming level,” the WHO statement said.
Earlier this year, a UN report said nearly 1 million people had been forced to flee their homes in the Democratic Republic of Congo due to attacks on civilians by armed groups and the unstable security situation.
Since December, some 25,000 cases of cholera and more than 136,000 cases of measles have been reported in eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The WHO says it needs $174 million this year to provide health assistance there, but has so far raised just $23 million.
According to WHO, the agency is accelerating the process of establishing a disease surveillance and warning system in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
