Difficult situation of aquaculture

Since the beginning of the year, aquaculture in the province has encountered difficulties due to the decrease in prices of commercial fish and shrimp and low farming efficiency.

Currently, the province has 129 households/141 rafts/3,021 cages for aquaculture at sea in 7 farming areas: Tam Thanh commune of Phu Quy district; Vinh Tan commune, Binh Thanh commune, Phan Ri Cua town of Tuy Phong district; Tan Thanh commune of Ham Thuan Nam district; Hoa Thang commune of Bac Binh district and Mui Ne ward of Phan Thiet city. The main farming objects are cobia, grouper, pompano, catfish, and lobsters.

Aquaculture area in August 2023 reached 222.4 hectares, down 2% over the same period last year; the cumulative 8 months of 2023 is estimated at 2,056.5 hectares, down 6.4% over the same period last year (of which fish farming area is 1,572.4 hectares, down 10.1%; shrimp farming area is 409.5 hectares, down 4.8%). In addition, aquaculture output in the month is estimated at 1,212 tons, down 0.9% over the same period last year; the cumulative 8 months of 2023 is 6,433.3 tons, down 16.2% over the same period last year (of which fish of all kinds is estimated at 3,345.4 tons, down 21.5%; brackish water shrimp is estimated at 2,909.9 tons, down 11.9%).
