The British newspaper The Telegraph quoted informed sources as saying that the Israeli intelligence agency (Mossad) hired people in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to plant an explosive device to assassinate Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh when he came to Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iranian President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian on July 30.
An IRGC official told The Telegraph : "They (investigators) are now certain that Mossad hired people from the Ansar al-Mahdi security unit… After further investigation, they found more explosive devices in two other rooms." Ansar al-Mahdi is a unit within the IRGC responsible for ensuring the safety of senior officials.
Earlier this week, the New York Times reported that Mr. Haniyeh was assassinated by a bomb placed in his room two months ago. It said three explosive devices were placed in rooms at the IRGC guesthouse in northern Tehran, where the Hamas leader was expected to stay, adding that the devices were detonated from abroad in the early morning of July 31.
Two unnamed Iranian officials told The Telegraph that the assassination attempt on Mr Haniyeh was originally planned in May, during his visit to attend the funeral of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, but the operation was unsuccessful due to a crowd inside the building.
One of the sources within the IRGC told The Telegraph that the assassination of the Hamas political leader was “an insult to Iran and a major security breach” for the IRGC, adding that an internal investigation was currently underway within the organization.
Another official revealed: "Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, has summoned all the commanders several times in the past two days, he wants answers. … For him, solving the security issue is more important than seeking revenge."
