Thanks to advances in wireless technology like 5G and the like, human-emitted mobile waves from Earth could be detected by extraterrestrial civilizations.

In a study recently published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, scientists said that 5G technology currently used for mobile networks and satellite connections could help humans make contact with alien civilizations.

“Due to the development of the internet, television signals are no longer the main contributor to radio emissions from the Earth. Mobile communication systems now represent a new and growing component of the planet’s radio emissions, which are anthropogenic,” wrote study author Ramiro Saide.

Research into what would likely happen in the event of a human-like civilization, with radio telescopes similar to or more advanced than our own, observing Earth.

Cellular networks are still relatively new, but this radio “leak” could make humans detectable to aliens.

“To our knowledge, no previous studies have investigated the effects of mobile signal leakage. Our study provides some insight into what we might expect if there were a human-like civilisation elsewhere in the Milky Way with radio telescope technology similar to ours or more advanced than ours,” the scientists said.

According to research, the emission of mobile waves on Earth has increased rapidly in the past few decades. Developing countries in Africa, along with some Asian countries including Japan and China, are contributing a lot to this.

Any civilization within about 10 light years of Earth may not be able to detect the signal at this point, the researchers say. But in the coming decades, as more mobile signals “leak” away from Earth, aliens may be able to detect more details about our blue planet and how its technology works.
