According to information from Hanoi City Police on May 9, a woman in Hoang Mai district was recently scammed out of more than 1 billion VND when she registered her child for a "junior military summer camp" on Facebook.
The victim is Ms. M., who was looking for a summer course for her child. On Facebook, she saw many fanpages with advertisements for participating in "Semester in the Army 2024".
These accounts introduce connections to military units nationwide. Participants experience the training environment of the armed forces; receive food support, uniforms and certifications from military units.
In the introductory information section, there is information about the location of the headquarters of military units; posting images and articles from official pages of the military force. In particular, the subjects also use images of military activities to post in advertising articles.
Seeing that Ms. M. had a need, the subject lured her into giving him her phone number and switched to texting on Zalo and Telegram. They asked Ms. M. to do "surveys" to achieve a high credit score.
Ms. M. participated in "survey 1" with the amount of more than 3 million VND, "survey 2" with the amount of more than 10 million VND, both received a refund and a small survey fee. When participating in "survey 3" with the amount of 35 million VND, Ms. M. did not receive any money.
The subjects used many different reasons, asking her to transfer money to get back the amount that had not been refunded. Within just 5 hours, Ms. M. made the money transfer transactions and the subjects appropriated more than 1 billion VND.
It is worth mentioning that the police agency has previously warned many times about fraudulent tricks when registering for courses such as "Summer Camp for Skills - Junior People's Police Semester", "Summer Camp for Skills - People's Police Semester", "Summer Army Camp", "Summer Army Experience"... on social networks, but there are still victims who fall into the trap.
The Hanoi City Police Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention recommends that people be vigilant. When parents want to register their children for experiential and skill courses, they should contact or call schools and units to ask and verify clearly.
Registration should be done in person instead of online or by bank transfer. Never follow instructions to transfer money to anyone for any reason without confirming the identity of the recipient.
In case of property fraud, people need to immediately report to the nearest police agency for reception and guidance on how to handle the situation.
