The landslide occurred deep inland in Laos, about 70-80km from Cau Treo International Border Gate. This is the only road from Laos to Cau Treo International Border Gate and vice versa.

Heavy rains that fell across many areas of Laos from August 3 to August 11 caused floods, damaging homes and infrastructure, and submerging hundreds of hectares of farmland in many provinces and the capital Vientiane, Lao officials said.

Heavy rains and floods have affected the capital Vientiane, Sekong and Savannakhet provinces, as well as several districts of Champasak and Xayaboury provinces, among others. In the capital Vientiane, flooding has caused widespread traffic disruption.

Lao authorities have surveyed the areas most affected by the floods. There are 29 areas damaged by floods in 25 villages with thousands of households affected in Sikhottabong district of the capital Vientiane.
