Finding directions for developing island tourism

At the workshop, delegates emphasized that sea and island tourism has been and is a type of tourism that has been invested in, exploited and developed, and is considered an important task contributing to making tourism a spearhead economic sector.

Sea and island tourism also contributes to promoting the development of many other economic sectors, creating more jobs for society, especially in coastal areas, ensuring effective exploitation of the potential and advantages of the sea and islands associated with ensuring national security and defense.

The workshop was held in Can Gio district, a locality with an economic breakthrough development orientation with the goal of "developing pillar economic types such as tourism, ecology, and resorts; connecting with international tourist routes through the international passenger port on the Saigon-Vung Tau route; supporting the implementation of the Can Gio coastal urban tourism expansion investment project according to the approved planning. Striving for the total number of tourists to Can Gio in the period of 2021-2030 to reach 49 million, with an average growth rate of 12.5%/year".

This is a great opportunity for Can Gio district to become a regional and world-class resort city by 2030. From now until 2030, there will be many issues that need to be discussed, need to be done, need determination and social consensus, to awaken the long-term potential sleep of Can Gio land.

According to the delegates, Ho Chi Minh City is facing challenges in socio-economic development. Therefore, developing the marine economy is extremely necessary to help the local economy take off, helping the city no longer depend on the mainland economy but can expand the economic potential from the sea in Can Gio district.

Located in the Southeast, about 50km from the city center, Can Gio district has a coastline of 23km and a natural area of more than 71,300ha with large mangrove forests and rivers, accounting for 70% of the total natural area of the district. With a unique geographical location, extremely favored by nature, Can Gio is known as the "green lung" of Ho Chi Minh City and has many advantages and great potential to promote the development of the marine economy.

In addition, as the waterway gateway of Ho Chi Minh City, orienting maritime strategy and national security for Can Gio district is always a very necessary issue.

The workshop was held with the aim of sharing experiences, discussing challenges, opportunities and solutions for economic sectors to participate in developing eco-tourism, community tourism, and high-quality beach resorts in coastal areas, including Can Gio district.

At the same time, propose solutions to build, develop, and diversify international-class marine tourism products, product chains, and brands on the basis of preserving biodiversity, promoting the values of unique natural, cultural, and historical heritages of regions, connecting with international tourist routes to make Vietnam an attractive destination in the world.
