Community tourism is one of the highlights in Phu Tho, helping to promote and introduce to tourists the unique cultural values of the Ancestral Land. In particular, Tan Son and Thanh Son districts with the cultural identity of the Dao and Muong people and the natural beauty of Xuan Son National Park are suitable locations for the development of this type of tourism.
According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Lan - Vice Chairman of Phu Tho Province Tourism Association, community tourism and cultural experiences will be the common trend of tourists in the coming time, in addition, this type of tourism also contributes significantly to the locality such as creating many jobs, bringing sustainable income to the people. Currently, Thanh Son and Tan Son districts with destinations such as Long Coc tea hill, Xuan Son National Park ... have focused on developing community tourism, however, many places are still not systematic, lacking high-quality accommodation facilities. Small-scale homestays are often unable to accommodate large groups of guests, especially during peak tourist seasons.
In order to promote and accelerate the development of community tourism in Thanh Son and Tan Son districts and some localities in Phu Tho province, Phu Tho Tourism Association has just organized a tour to learn about community tourism experiences in Lam Binh and Na Hang districts (Tuyen Quang province).
In Lam Binh district (Tuyen Quang), community tourism in some villages has developed rapidly and professionally in recent times. Traditional stilt houses are preserved by the people, the landscape and environmental sanitation are always green, clean and beautiful. The local community unanimously participates and shares the benefits from tourism activities through providing food, entertainment, agricultural products, etc. In addition, community tourism in Lam Binh receives support and attention from the local government, such as low-interest loan policies, financial support for households to renovate stilt houses to welcome guests and for art groups and teams, etc.
Through a field survey, Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Head of Thanh Son and Tan Son Tourism Associations, said that the "key" to developing community tourism is the decisive participation of local authorities. Community tourism destinations are often remote, requiring convenient traffic connections to bring visitors. Preserving the landscape is also very important, such as surrounding the stilt houses must be green space, instead of high-rise buildings, concrete will reduce the attractiveness of tourists.
"The reality in Lam Binh shows that when all levels and sectors join together, community tourism will be successful. Community tourism in Lam Binh is prioritized, so the government has thoroughly promoted awareness and support from the people. People preserve the traditional stilt houses, maintain environmental hygiene and maintain indigenous cultural features, which creates the attractiveness of Lam Binh. Tuyen Quang province also has policies to directly support community tourism with money and very low-interest loan policies. In addition, Lam Binh has also been successful in attracting and connecting investors, businesses, scientists... to participate in developing community tourism," said Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan.
Finding a breakthrough direction for community tourism in Phu Tho
In recent years, Long Coc tea hill has become a prominent destination in Phu Tho province, especially for tourists who love taking photos, "hunting clouds" and watching the sunrise on the tea hill. Long Coc tea hill has been connected by Phu Tho Tourism Promotion Information Center with other destinations in Xuan Son National Park, creating a unique cultural and natural tourism route with many experiences. However, in reality, although the number of visitors has increased, community tourism has not brought high economic efficiency. People still have little experience, so they are not bold in developing tourism.
"In Thanh Son and Tan Son, there are currently not many traditional stilt houses left, and investing in building new stilt houses is difficult because the cost is too high for households. Especially in the Xuan Son National Park area, there are still problems with the mechanism, there needs to be specific policies for tourism development, creating conditions for people to have better income to compensate for low seasons, with few visitors. Even the landscape in some places has been urbanized, making it difficult to develop community tourism. We are proposing to establish a Long Coc commune community tourism development center, with eco-accommodation models on tea hills, introducing culture through cuisine, arts... and attracting local people to organize service groups, joining hands to do tourism", said Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan.
Currently, the Phu Tho Tourism Association is also making efforts to guide and support people in Thanh Son and Tan Son to promote their cultural and natural strengths for tourism. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Lan said: "We guide people on how to operate community guesthouses, how to welcome guests and knowledge about tourism. The association also connects travel businesses to bring guests, and at the same time, works with people to complete products and agricultural products to introduce at stores, supplementing agricultural farming experiences. Management agencies and businesses are making efforts to develop community tourism in Long Coc to become a bright spot of Phu Tho in the future."
The tourism potential in Tan Son and Thanh Son districts is assessed to be very large, however, experts say that if this area wants to make a breakthrough, it needs the participation of investors and businesses with rich experience in community tourism. "With businesses and investors laying the foundation and providing guidance, community tourism will develop faster than if people fumble around for a long time without any momentum. The professionalism and coordination ability of businesses will help shorten the development process of disadvantaged and backward localities in community tourism," said Dr. Pham Thai Thuy.
To meet the increasing demand and number of tourists, some more professional tourism projects are being implemented in Thanh Son and Tan Son of Phu Tho, such as Long Coc commune, which will have more communal stilt houses and high-end camping (glamping). Meanwhile, Thanh Son town has added the Thanh Son Tourist Reception Center complex, promising to diversify the experience of tourists, contributing to creating attraction and raising the level of local tourism.
