To Mua tea has the characteristics of large leaves and thick buds. It was brought from Da Bac district (Hoa Binh) and has been planted for about 60-70 years. In 1960, the tea growing movement was developed, and the people of Da Mai, Men and Dao villages were the pioneers in commercial tea growing in the commune. The To Mua tea brand has been affirmed both domestically and internationally, and is exported to the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.

Currently, To Mua has more than 640 hectares of Shan Tuyet tea, grown in 12 villages and 1 sub-area with over 80% of households in the commune participating in tea production and trading. The whole commune has 1,400 hectares of production land, of which the tea growing area accounts for nearly half. Tea trees play an important role in the agricultural economic structure, creating a stable source of income for local people.

In recent times, the Commune People's Committee has implemented sustainable development solutions for tea plants such as building a cooperative model for production and business according to the value chain; encouraging people to grow and care for tea in an organic and VietGAP direction; attracting and calling on businesses and cooperatives to invest in and process tea, and having long-term product consumption contracts with tea growers.

Each year, To Mua tea produces 5-6 harvests, with an average yield of 18-20 tons/ha/year. The output of fresh tea buds is estimated at over 15,000 tons/year, purchased by Hung Phat Tea Joint Stock Company and a number of businesses at a price of 5,500 - 6,000 VND/kg, bringing significant income to hundreds of tea-growing households in the commune.

To achieve the goal of developing and enhancing the tea brand, the People's Committee of To Mua commune promotes the connection between enterprises and tea growers to ensure stable output for products; continues to propagate and mobilize people in the villages to produce high-quality tea; coordinates with the District Agricultural Service Center to guide people to apply scientific and technical measures, implement safe tea production models according to VietGAP standards, and move towards building OCOP products and developing the To Mua high-quality tea brand in the market.

Previously, in early 2022, a working group of the Vietnam Heritage Tree Council went to To Mua commune to survey and evaluate ancient tea trees and selected 100 trees that met the criteria for recognition as "Vietnam Heritage Trees", the remaining trees were included in the overall area of ancient tea trees that need to be preserved and conserved.

Through assessment, the Vietnam Heritage Tree Council determined that the ancient tea area in To Mua is a beautiful complex. In addition to harvesting tea buds, if properly invested in, it will become an eco-tourism destination for people to come and admire these ancient tea trees.

The recognition of 100 Shan Tuyet tea trees in To Mua commune as Vietnam Heritage Trees is a very important event, honoring the unique and typical values of the ecological landscape in To Mua; contributing to the propaganda and promotion of the values of green trees; raising the sense of responsibility for protecting the environment, nature, preserving and promoting the value of tea trees of local people.
