According to media reports, the layoffs do not affect employees currently working in the US. Although TikTok has not announced the exact number, it appears that less than 500 people have lost their jobs.
A TikTok spokesperson said the changes are part of a broader effort to strengthen its global content moderation efforts. “We plan to invest $2 billion in safety and trust in 2024 alone and will continue to improve our efficiency, with 80% of violating content removed automatically.”
Currently, the short-video app uses both automated detection technology and human moderators to evaluate content shared on the platform, but is increasingly relying on technology.
This is the latest round of layoffs at TikTok this year. In January, 60 TikTok sales and advertising employees lost their jobs. In April, the company cut more than 250 jobs in Ireland and in May, about 1,000 jobs in operations and marketing.
TikTok says on its website that it employs more than 110,000 people in more than 200 cities around the world. A source said the company is planning to make more cuts next month as it looks to consolidate its operations.
