“My whole family is suffering, my husband and I do whatever we are hired to do. “I really wanted to go to school, but life was so difficult at times. I even thought about dropping out of school, but I didn’t want my grandmother and two younger siblings to suffer, so I was determined to go to university,” Lang confided.

Not wanting to drop out of school, Lang took out a student loan to pay for his tuition. During the first few days of school, Lang only dared to eat instant noodles to save the money he borrowed.

“Today I received the scholarship, I still can’t believe it’s true. I would like to thank the sponsors very much, I will definitely try to study well” – Lang said.

New student Nhu Thi Thu Nguyet (Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport) sent her gratitude to the organizing committee. She said she and her mother cried when they heard the news of receiving the scholarship.

“I lost my father when I was young, my mother is disabled but she shouldered everything. Even though she was not healthy or financially well, she still tried her best to take care of my education. In 6th grade, my uncle and aunt took me to the Dak Lak Social Protection Center. Here, the government took care of my accommodation and education, everything became more convenient and not as difficult as before.

But when I went to university, I had to pay for my own tuition. So the tuition fee issue was a difficult issue. When I received the notice that I was on the scholarship list, I felt like a burden had been lifted off my shoulders. I was so happy that I went to tell my mother. I cried, and she cried too.

Mom called to remind me to thank the sponsor.

Khang confided that there were times when he wanted to give up because his family's economic life was too difficult. However, thanks to the encouragement of his mother and teachers, Khang tried to overcome adversity and entered university.

“Last night I couldn’t sleep because I was so happy and looking forward to the morning when I would receive the scholarship to support my family. I think that these are examples of overcoming difficulties that society highly values. There are many other students who are in such difficult and unfortunate situations, but you are the typical examples, the most beautiful flowers in the garden of good people and good deeds. You have touched an intellectual environment and I think you deserve to be supported and encouraged.

I believe that you will overcome the upcoming journey with the positive energy accumulated from the past journey. I hope Tuoi Tre newspaper and sponsors will continue to help the unfortunate. Not only the new students here, but also many young people with strong willpower will continue to support. We need a lot of work to do, but supporting talented and strong young people is always necessary," he said.

Want to sell banh bot loc at university to make a living

Freshman Nguyen Thi Nho burst into tears as soon as she stepped onto the stage to exchange – Photo: DUYEN PHAN

At the scholarship award ceremony, many delegates, teachers and new students were deeply moved by the report about the situation of Pham Thi Nho, a student majoring in Management Information Systems at Da Nang University. When Nho was only 3 years old, her mother left. The two children depended on each other in a dilapidated house.

Ba Nho is a war veteran, injured so his health is very weak, unable to do heavy work. Loving his little daughter, the old father "a single father" still works hard to make sure Nho has enough meals and books for school.

But disaster always comes when life seems to be starting to get better. Dad fell ill and left forever when Nho was just 12 years old, in 6th grade.

Nho has been living at her aunt's house, Mrs. Pham Thi Bong (village 4, Hoa Le commune, Krong Bong, Dak Lak) since she was 12 years old. Feeling sorry for her orphaned and lonely niece in the cold house, Mrs. Bong took Nho to her house, even though at that time her family situation was not very good.

The couple has a small amount of land and 5 children who are studying. Mrs. Bong said Nho was psychologically traumatized but very determined and eager to learn.

Then, one by one, Mrs. Bong's children grew up and went to work and moved out, and Nho became the "youngest child" in the family. Every day, the two of them made cakes together and took them to the market to sell.

Mrs. Bong said that after school, Nho rode his motorbike home, rolled up his sleeves and kneaded dough and made cakes with her. After finishing his work, he ran home to sweep the house and burn incense for his father.

Fighting for life, trying to beat cancer to return to school

New student Ka Tham - Photo: DUYEN PHAN

In September 2023, Ka Tham from Loc Tan Commune (Bao Lam District, Lam Dong Province) enrolled and became a new student of Civil Law (University of Economics and Law, VNU-HCM City). A month later, the pain came to the little girl. Cho Ray Hospital reported that she had quite severe cancer, Hodgkin's Lymphoma stage IIIB.

The doctor ordered her to undergo chemotherapy as soon as possible. Thinking of every possible way, Ka Tham decided to ignore her illness and the doctor's advice to continue studying. She did not dare to tell her mother clearly, but stage 3 cancer was not a trivial illness. Ka Tham collapsed.

Lymphomas appeared all over her body. She packed up and left the dormitory to go home to wait for a miracle in her life. She asked the school to reserve her study results for 1 year.

Ka Tham's family was the poorest in the village, only his father worked as a construction worker, Ka Tham's mother admitted that she craved dried fish but did not dare to buy it.

She and her family chose to treat her with traditional Chinese medicine. Fortunately, after 3 months of taking the medicine, the lymph nodes began to shrink. Ka Tham was cheerful as the pain gradually went away.

After Tet, she seemed healthy like a normal person. Her journey back to school began in the way she was very familiar with: working in the fields.

By September 2023, through the support of the Support to School scholarship, Ka Tham was able to re-enroll in school. Once again, she became a freshman.

This time the road to the lecture hall was different: there was the companionship of strangers who loved my spirit of overcoming difficulties, and there was the waiting of teachers and friends.

“It was also because of that difficulty that I realized that going to school was more important to me than the doctor’s predictions that could be calculated in months and days. I will become a lawyer,” she said.

Freshman Nguyen Thi Nho burst into tears as soon as she stepped onto the stage. Emotions about her family background came flooding back with the questions, making Nho cry. Nho had no mother and was orphaned and was taken care of by her aunt.

“I want to tell you that I love you very much. When Dad passed away, he told me that I had to live with Aunt Bong so that he could feel at ease. When Dad was alive, she helped me a lot. Every month if Dad didn’t have money to buy rice, she was the one who bought rice and brought it to us. When Dad didn’t have enough money to buy new clothes for the new school year, she was the one who bought new clothes for me to wear to school. When Dad passed away, Dad told me to live with Aunt Bong and listen to her.

The lady who sells banh bot loc is not well off, but she always gives me everything I need. I hope she will take care of me and wait until I study hard and succeed so I can repay her kindness.”

The difficulties he overcame made the new student Ka Tham, who was suffering from cancer, calm. Ka Tham did not mention his illness much. Tham said that illness could not stop him, Tham would try to become a lawyer to seek justice for everyone, wanting no one to face injustice.

This year, Binh Dien Fertilizer Joint Stock Company donated 8 billion VND to the Scholarship Program "Tiep suc den truong".

Scholarships are a great motivation, a meaningful preparation for new students to open the door to their lives. You will study well to become a high-quality labor source for society in the future.

“We know that you are in difficult circumstances but you are very determined. You have inspired and touched us and will promote production and business activities, profits and develop the country together. From there, we will spread love and heart to heart,” Mr. Dong expressed.

He hopes that with the support of Tuoi Tre newspaper and sponsors, the new students will study hard, constantly innovate to soon become successful, and contribute more to society. “This is just the first step in a journey full of difficulties. I hope that with this love, you will make more efforts to help your family and society in the future,” said Mr. Dong.

“Believe that you have a supportive community around you,” he advised.

Before the ceremony, Mr. Ngo Van Dong - General Director of Binh Dien Fertilizer Joint Stock Company - said that at the ceremony to award the "Tiep suc den truong" scholarship in Da Lat City to new students of the Central Highlands this time, he had many emotions, because many students had overcome adversity and difficulties to come to university.

According to Mr. Dong, in the 2024 scholarship season, Binh Dien Fertilizer Joint Stock Company and sponsors established the "Companion of Farmers" fund to support new students to enter universities and colleges over the past many years.

Mr. Dong believes that this is a gift for new students who are full of determination, have strong will, and overcome adversity to enter university.
