Halal tourism is a relatively new concept in Vietnam. Halal tourism can be understood as Islamic tourism or Muslim-friendly tourism, ensuring that the tourism services provided are in accordance with the specific requirements of Islam. According to calculations, the value of the global Halal tourism market in 2023 reached about 266 billion USD, and is forecast to reach 276 billion USD in 2024.

According to the Global Muslim Tourism Index report, the number of Muslim tourists in 2023 will reach 140 million, in 2024 it is estimated to reach 160 million and by 2028 it is forecasted to reach 230 million. The spending power of Muslim tourists is increasing, especially the market of tourists from countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Recognizing the great potential of this tourist flow, recently, the Vietnamese tourism industry has organized many tourism promotion campaigns to boost the development of the Muslim tourist market to Vietnam. Quang Nam is a popular destination for countries with large Muslim populations such as Malaysia, Singapore and India.

In the first 9 months of 2024, Quang Nam welcomed more than 44,000 Malaysian visitors (ranked 8th in the top 10 largest international tourist markets), nearly 35,000 Indian visitors and more than 21,000 Singaporean visitors.

In addition, Indonesia is a very potential Halal tourist market in Southeast Asia. Quang Nam tourism will also benefit from the fact that Da Nang City is actively promoting and preparing to open a direct flight route with the Indonesian market.

According to research by the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, Halal tourists tend to travel in large groups or families, staying for long periods (1-2 weeks) at selected destinations. Halal tourists often like to visit places with beautiful natural landscapes or amusement parks to sightsee...

However, the Halal industry in Vietnam is still in its infancy and does not have a clear strategic direction. Meanwhile, the development of Halal tourism requires a diverse supply of Halal products from food, beverages to pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, fashion, etc.

Halal culinary establishments, which are a decisive factor in Halal tourism, are still very few and do not have the necessary level of reliability due to the lack of international Halal certificates, even in major tourist centers in Vietnam.

Mr. Nguyen Son Thuy - Vice President of Quang Nam Tourism Association said that an advantage for local tourism in particular and Vietnam tourism in general is that there are many Muslim tourists in some Southeast Asian countries. Just exploiting nearby markets such as Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines... well, the sales achieved will be very good before expanding further.

A characteristic of this type of customer is that when the value chain and "ecosystem" serving Halal customers are formed and completed, the spread of the destination brand will be quite strong through word of mouth of customers who have experienced it directly.
