Tien Yen: Shrimp farmers proactively restore production

Việt NamViệt Nam16/09/2024

Storm No. 3 has caused heavy damage to the Quang Ninh Fisheries industry. Localities:   Van Don, Cam Pha, Ha Long, Quang Yen… are almost “sea white”. Although they also suffered significant damage from this storm, luckily, shrimp farmers in Tien Yen have basically kept their ponds and have now immediately started to restore production after the storm.

Shrimp are still growing and developing well in a pond in Ha Dong Bac village, Hai Lang commune, Tien Yen district after storm No. 3.

Storm No. 3 hit when Mr. Diep Van Bao's shrimp farming household (Ha Dong Bac village, Hai Lang commune, Tien Yen district) had just planted shrimp for 20 days. His family has nearly 7 hectares of shrimp farming, including 1 extensive pond and 2 industrial ponds. Hearing the news of the storm, especially when he knew that the storm had upgraded to a super storm, Mr. Bao, like all other farmers, tried their best to prevent and minimize the damage caused by natural disasters while feeling uneasy. Proactively draining water from the pond to avoid heavy rains overflowing the pond, storing water for immediate use after the storm, arranging generators and oil to run water fans to create oxygen in case of power outages..., he did everything he could. Thanks to that, although he also suffered damage when the storm wind tore part of the pond lining, Mr. Bao was able to quickly overcome it and continue farming.

Mr. Diep Van Bao shared: I am lucky to be one of the shrimp farmers who did not suffer too much damage from storm No. 3. The shrimp are still healthy and growing well today. The first few days after the storm, the power went out and I had to use a generator, but now that the power is back, it is stable. I also try to take good care of the pond so that this farming season can still be as expected.

After the storm, Mr. Diep Van Bao has now returned to normal production.

Hai Lang commune is the area with the largest shrimp farming area in Tien Yen district, with an area of over 886 hectares, of which 65 hectares are intensive farming by 126 households; 820 hectares are extensive farming by 256 households. Similar to Mr. Bao's farming household, although it also suffered a lot of damage due to storm No. 3, up to now, the households have basically kept their ponds and lagoons, and proactively restored production. Along with that, the power grid has been stably supplied again, and production activities have also returned to the same level as before the storm.

Mr. Luc Quoc Dai, Vice Chairman of Hai Lang Commune People's Committee, Tien Yen District, said: Currently, the commune is reviewing and counting the damage of aquaculture households in the area. Nearly 100% of farming households have been able to return to stable production. However, after natural disasters, there is often a risk of disease outbreaks, in which shrimp is a very sensitive farming species to the weather, so the locality focuses on providing technical guidance to farmers, proactively preventing emerging pathogens, ensuring that the farming season still achieves productivity and output as planned.

The grid electricity is stably supplied again to shrimp farming households.

According to preliminary statistics, on a shrimp farming area of 1,240.4 hectares (intensive farming: 175.7 hectares; extensive farming: 1,064.7 hectares), Tien Yen district suffered 31,420m2 of damage .   The roof of the aquaculture area, many households had their pond lining torn by the wind, causing a loss of part of the farmed shrimp... The locality is also actively supporting people to quickly stabilize production.

Mr. Hoang Van Sinh, Chairman of Tien Yen District People's Committee, said: Due to being very proactive in natural disaster prevention, Tien Yen did not suffer too much damage during storm No. 3, especially the large and serious damage that caused production stagnation in the field of aquaculture, especially shrimp farming. However, to serve the people to return to production, immediately after the storm, the locality quickly overcame the power problems, and restored the grid power supply to the people. Traffic routes were also smooth. The district has directed the local agricultural sector to closely monitor the farming areas, overcome the consequences of the storm as well as promptly resolve arising problems, ensuring stable production for this autumn-winter crop, as well as the economic growth scenario for the whole year in the district.

All households in Tien Yen district have been able to return to production.

Quang Ninh's aquaculture industry suffered heavy damage after storm No. 3, and there is certainly still a lot of work to be done. However, the fact that shrimp farmers in Tien Yen have been able to return to normal production is still a positive sign after the storm.
