A thousand dollars in charity is also valuable, why bother "covering" it?

For nearly ten days, the people of the North have suffered countless tragic losses from storm No. 3. During those most difficult days, we once again witnessed the spirit of solidarity, "the whole leaves cover the torn leaves" of millions of Vietnamese hearts. In just a few days of launching and calling for help, the Central Office of the Vietnam Fatherland Front has received donations from the social community of more than 1,094 billion VND (as of 5:00 p.m. on September 15), which is the clearest proof of the precious, eternal strength of our nation.

Not only that, during the most difficult days of the storm and flood, hundreds of green banh chung stoves were still burning bright day and night, all directed towards the people in the flood-hit areas. Thousands of trucks quickly supplied essential necessities from all over the country to 11 northern provinces such as Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Yen Bai, Lao Cai, Cao Bang, Phu Tho, Lang Son, Bac Giang, Vinh Phuc, ... to share with the people in the flood-hit areas.

We must admit that, thanks to the extensive sharing of information on social networks, many individuals and organizations have opened their arms and extended their compassion to their fellow countrymen. The spirit of solidarity, support, and mutual love among every Vietnamese citizen is of great significance, valuable, and has been promoted at the right time…

However, taking advantage of the storm and flood situation, the good images of “the whole leaf covers the torn leaf”, “a piece of food when hungry is worth a package when full” that have been around for thousands of years of the Vietnamese people have been distorted. Some famous people, artists… instead of using their “names” to call for support, went directly to the flooded areas to distribute instant noodles, dry food packages… while people were hungry and thirsty, they took the opportunity to “show off”.

The “colorful” story of singer couple Ung Hoang Phuc and Que Van doing charity work in Phuc Tan ward (Hanoi) recently caused a noisy and negative public opinion. It even had a significant impact on the image of this artist couple. Or the case of athlete Pham Nhu Phuong (Louis Pham) was also mentioned by the community in the noise of charity statements.

Another example is the hot Tiktoker “Viet Anh Pi Po”, with more than 1.3 million followers on the platform, who posted pictures of him donating more than 20 million VND to people affected by Typhoon Yagi. However, when the statement from the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front was available, netizens discovered that the amount he actually donated was only 1 million VND…

Charity is a humane story that comes from the heart, the amount depends on the heart, small people contribute small, big people contribute big. Agree that, those who want to polish their name, build an image and enjoy the joy of praise on the media or social networking platforms.

But why does a humane and good act like charity have to be accompanied by a “flagship” and formality to create buzz? Is the value of kindness equated with the amount of money donated and the ostentation? If you do charity, even a donation of 1,000 VND is valuable, so why bother with a “flagship”?

More worryingly, when the trend of “poster” is upgraded to a habit of blatant lies, it will be a great danger to the social community. Even charity activities have been distorted and become an opportunity for some individuals and organizations to build their personal image, take advantage of it, and engage in illegal activities.

Charity now seems to be a race for fame, not compassion for the less fortunate. If the problem of “excessive” boasting is not controlled, falsehoods will have a place to live, then at the very least it will be a “knife game” and soon “blow away” someone’s personality, value, reputation, and image…
