At a recent UN forum, Yojna Patel, India's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, called for a more decisive and transparent approach to reforming the Security Council. She stressed the need for written negotiations, a crucial practice in other multilateral processes but one that has yet to be applied in this matter.
While acknowledging the efforts of the co-chairs of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN), including the creation of a digital archive and live streaming, Ms. Patel pointed out that progress on reforms remains slow and has not met expectations.
Ms. Patel also criticized the summary of comments on Security Council reform, saying it was flawed, including conflicting references and a lack of consensus on some points.
She argued that the current draft does not reflect the broad consensus of member states, which could affect the legality of the final document.
India continues to support the expansion of the Security Council to reflect current global realities and is ready to cooperate with other member states to advance these important reforms.
