The end of the year and Lunar New Year are always times for parties, celebrations, and family and friend reunions. However, this is also a time to be especially vigilant about food safety and hygiene, as the habit of hoarding food to prepare for parties can pose a serious risk of food poisoning.

Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen, Director of the Poison Control Center, Bach Mai Hospital, said that the Lunar New Year 2025 is approaching, and food safety issues need to be focused on throughout the festive season.

Recent food poisoning cases show that there are two main causes, the first is due to poor quality food.

Foods of unknown origin, unlabeled or with production processes that do not ensure food hygiene and safety, cheap foods that use preservatives and toxic colorants to create attractive colors but are not safe for health.

Unhygienic processed foods, such as street foods or handmade foods from unsanitary establishments, are easily contaminated with dangerous bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli, which are also potential causes of food poisoning.

The second reason is due to the food preservation and eating habits of consumers. Improper food preservation leads to spoilage or contamination of food, storing too much food causes food to spoil and can cause poisoning when processed.

Uncontrolled eating at consecutive parties, combining many types of food can cause poisoning due to chemical reactions in the body.

Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen warns that food poisoning can cause mild symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, to severe cases such as liver failure, kidney failure and even death. The most vulnerable groups are children, the elderly and pregnant women, so extreme caution is needed.

To prevent food poisoning during Tet and year-end festivals, Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen gives specific recommendations. Consumers should choose food with clear origins, prioritize buying food at reputable establishments with food safety certificates.

Before buying, you need to check the food carefully, make sure the food is fresh, has no strange smell, and is not discolored. Limit eating unhygienic street food, especially food prepared on the spot in restaurants without food safety certificates.

Consumers should also be careful to avoid "fast food" sold during the festival, because these dishes can contain many bacteria and toxic chemicals. In particular, it is absolutely necessary to avoid using alcohol or beer of unknown origin and avoid buying homemade alcohol or alcohol without clear labels. In addition, proper food preservation is very important.

People should ensure that food is stored in a suitable environment, the refrigerator is cold enough and food is covered to avoid contamination. Leftovers should be reheated before eating, cooled and stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator. Before eating again, it should be reheated to ensure that bacteria do not invade.

Doctors at Bach Mai Hospital also recommend not to stockpile too much food at home to avoid food spoilage. Buying and preparing just enough food is the best solution, as shops will reopen right after the Tet holiday, helping people not to worry about stockpiling too much food.

People also need to control their diet, not eat foods that are incompatible with each other or eat too much food at once, as this can overload the digestive system and increase the risk of food poisoning.

In addition to people's awareness of protecting their own health, Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen also emphasized the important role of authorities in inspecting and supervising the production, processing and trading of food during the festival.

Food production establishments need to strictly comply with food safety and hygiene regulations and enhance social responsibility in providing clean food, ensuring the health of consumers. "Food safety is not only the responsibility of the authorities but also the common responsibility of the whole society.

Every citizen needs to raise awareness, consume intelligently and responsibly to protect the health of themselves and their families. Don't let happy year-end parties become a nightmare because of unfortunate incidents.

When detecting signs of food poisoning, first aid steps should be taken immediately. If symptoms are mild such as nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, the patient should drink plenty of water, possibly electrolyte water to avoid dehydration, and eat easily digestible foods such as porridge.

At the same time, keep the body warm, do not take medicine on your own and continue to monitor the symptoms. If you cannot drink electrolyte water due to severe vomiting, take the patient to a medical facility immediately. In serious cases such as severe diarrhea, convulsions, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, take the patient to the nearest medical facility for timely emergency care.

With specific precautions and the initiative of each citizen, hopefully we will have a safe and happy Tet season without having to worry about food poisoning problems.
