Project to support the development of community production of breeding Sind crossbred cattle in Dong Son commune (under project 2: Project to diversify livelihoods, develop poverty reduction models of the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction. Dong Son commune is one of the communes in the district registered to implement the project to breed Sind crossbred cattle. Accordingly, the project's goal is to build a model to support production development, diversify livelihoods in accordance with local strengths, in order to contribute to creating more jobs for poor farmers. At the same time, bring livestock breeds with high economic value into production, gradually form and develop production in the direction of goods, contributing to increasing income for farmers, self-reliance to stabilize life to escape poverty sustainably.
The State supported a Sind crossbred cow to help Mrs. Ha Thi Dien's family in Mang 1 area have more determination to escape poverty.
With Mr. Ha Van Chang - Head of the Community Production Team in Mang 1 and Mang 2 areas, we visited the breeding cow model of Mrs. Ha Thi Dien's family. The family has two mothers and children, the son is over 30 years old but has lost his ability to work due to a traffic accident, Mrs. Dien's family is a poor household in the commune. In 2024, she was one of the households supported to raise breeding cows by the project. After 4 months of raising and caring for them, her family has initially enjoyed the results of having a calf... This is a very happy signal for the family, from which she has more determination to try to escape poverty. Or like the households of Mr. Ha Hai Yen and Ha Xuan Que, who have also been supported to raise cows, they now have calves.
Mr. Ha Van Chang said: “After households are supported with cows, the Community Production Group will be the focal point to organize for members to visit and learn from the experiences of some farms inside and outside the province so that households participating in the project can directly select breeding cows and assign them to member households in the group to carry out breeding according to the approved project content...”.
To ensure people in grazing and caring, the commune has organized technical training for members of the Project Implementation Team on measures to raise, care for, prevent diseases, process and store food for cows. At the same time, staff are regularly assigned to check and guide households in caring for, preventing and controlling diseases to ensure the cows develop well. The main food sources for cows include straw, fresh grass, hay, green food and tubers, fruits... In addition, silage and refined food are used.
The project uses Sind crossbred cows, which are disease-resistant and suitable for local farming conditions. Contracts are signed to purchase from quality-assured production facilities, recognized by competent authorities for transfer to households implementing the project. The breeding animals must meet basic standards such as: The breeding cows must be 15-18 months old with an average weight of 200-250 kg/head.
Mr. Ha Hai Yen and Ha Xuan Que's households also received support to raise cows and now have calves.
It is expected that after 2 years of care and application of science and technology in animal husbandry, it is estimated that 100% of the cows will give birth to 1 litter or more, the project will increase about 60 cows, of which the first litter cows are mature (about 10-12 months old), it is estimated that each cow will be sold on the market for about 14-16 million VND/cow. Total revenue is about 780 million VND. The average profit of each household is 15 million VND/household/2 years. From the 3rd year onwards, each household will have an annual income increase of about 15 million VND/year on average. Calves and finished cows will be consumed in the district and by traders in neighboring areas.
Through the implementation of the project, it is a bridge for beneficiary farmers to access science and technology in raising high-quality livestock breeds. Access and implement the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction, thereby changing thinking, changing awareness in implementing the program and effectively using policies and support resources of the State to strive to escape poverty sustainably.
The effective implementation of the project will contribute to creating jobs for many rural workers. Households will have improved livelihoods, improved quality of life of beneficiaries, increased income, contributing to the implementation of poverty reduction policies, and stabilizing the lives of local people.
