In order to promote the exploitation of the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) while minimizing the risks this technology may pose to society, the Swiss Federal Council has requested the Ministry of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications to prepare a comprehensive assessment of feasible management methods for AI.
The assessment will be based on Swiss law and will identify feasible regulatory approaches, as well as compatibility with European Union AI law and the Council of Europe's AI Convention. Both sets of international regulations are being assessed for suitability in Switzerland, and these documents are expected to be completed early next year.
Additionally, the review process will also consider regulatory requirements, with a focus on compliance with fundamental rights. The Federal Council is expected to establish a legal basis for issuing specific mandates for the proposed AI regulation by 2025 and clarify areas of responsibility.
