In order to accelerate plans to exploit the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) while minimizing the risks that this technology may pose to society, the Swiss Federal Council has asked the Ministry of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications to prepare an overview of possible regulatory approaches to AI.
The assessment will be based on Swiss law and identify possible regulatory approaches that are compatible with EU AI law and the Council of Europe’s AI Convention. Both sets of international regulations have been assessed as suitable for Switzerland and these documents are expected to be completed early next year.
In addition, the analysis will also consider regulatory requirements, with a focus on compliance with fundamental rights. The Federal Council is expected to create a legal basis for issuing specific tasks for the AI regulation proposal by 2025 and clarifying areas of responsibility.
