On May 23, the US Senate rejected the Biden administration's border security bill for the second time.

The border security bill was negotiated by both sides for months but failed to pass the Senate in February due to opposition from Republican lawmakers.

On May 23, the Democratic Party continued to push for a vote on the bill but could not overturn the result when Republican lawmakers once again rejected the document.

The bill did not even get a majority in the Senate, which needs 60 votes in favor to move to the House of Representatives for approval, as several Democrats also voted against it. Democrats currently control the Senate with 51 seats.

The Hill quoted President Biden as saying that Republicans were putting partisan politics above the country to block the border bill, which is considered the toughest in history, while Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas pledged to continue enforcing immigration laws with current limited resources.

Meanwhile, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said this was a move to attract the attention of the Democratic Party ahead of the election in November.

The document is designed to reduce border crossings into the United States, tighten rules for immigrants who qualify for asylum and speed up deportations of those who do not meet the criteria.

The bill would give the president the power to close the border under certain circumstances. If it becomes law, it would be the most sweeping immigration restriction in decades.

Immigration is becoming a central issue in the upcoming race for the White House. A Gallup poll conducted in April showed a sharp increase in the proportion of Americans who believe immigration is the most important issue that needs to be addressed immediately.

Meanwhile, a recent CNN poll found that 76% of voters believe immigration will determine the outcome of this year's election.
