According to a VNA correspondent in the US, with 76 votes in favor and 20 votes against, the US Senate on December 21 (local time) passed the Social Security Fairness Act, thereby expanding social security benefits to millions of public sector workers.
“We will vote for the Social Security Fairness Act to repeal broken policies that eat into the benefits of teachers, firefighters, postal workers, or public sector workers,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, before the vote.
The US House of Representatives previously approved the bill last month with an overwhelming vote of 327-75.
If signed into law by President Joe Biden, the bill would expand Social Security benefits to nearly 3 million public sector workers who also receive pensions.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, the bill would cost more than $190 billion over the next 10 years, meaning the Social Security Fund would run out nearly half a year earlier than under current law./.
