Ms. Lai Viet Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy: E-commerce is not only developing strongly in big cities but has also reached remote areas.

In order to promote the application of digital technology and e-commerce in the economy, support businesses to improve their competitiveness and sustainable development, on the afternoon of November 6, in Hanoi, the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy (Ministry of Industry and Trade) organized the Vietnam E-commerce and Digital Technology Application Forum 2024.

In his opening speech, Deputy Director of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy Lai Viet Anh said that in recent times, the Government has strongly promoted digital transformation through Decision No. 749/QD-TTg implementing the "National Digital Transformation Program to 2025, with a vision to 2030", Decision 645/QD-TTg approving the Master Plan for National E-commerce Development for the period 2021 - 2025, helping the application of digital technology to become more and more popular in life.

Positive changes from state management, business operations to people's consumption habits through e-commerce have marked a remarkable step forward in digital transformation and e-commerce in Vietnam.

Ms. Lai Viet Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy, said that e-commerce development has reached even remote areas.

Ms. Lai Viet Anh said that according to the most recent report at the Government Standing Conference on digital transformation in July 2024, Vietnam's e-commerce revenue in 2023 reached 20.5 billion USD and Vietnam became one of the countries with the fastest e-commerce growth rate in the region and in the world.

Many of the world's leading technology corporations have invested in Vietnam in new fields such as electronics, semiconductor chips, R&D, artificial intelligence, etc. Cashless payments are widely deployed nationwide. The percentage of adults with payment accounts reached 87%, exceeding the 2025 target of 80%.

“And it is a very clear fact that e-commerce is currently not only developing strongly in big cities but also in remote provinces and cities, the delivery capacity of delivery companies has reached remote areas,” said Ms. Lai Viet Anh.

Within the framework of the forum, two discussion sessions focused on the topics of developing the domestic e-commerce market and exporting through cross-border e-commerce. In particular, the discussion sessions at the discussion focused on supporting Vietnamese enterprises to effectively exploit the potential of e-commerce, optimize development opportunities and enhance competitiveness in the international market.

Delegates said that e-commerce is not only a bridge to help local goods reach consumers nationwide, but also supports expanding the influence of Vietnamese products in international markets. For local manufacturing enterprises, e-commerce opens up opportunities to reach a large number of potential customers nationwide, no longer dependent on traditional sales channels or geography. Thanks to that, local specialties, handicrafts, and agricultural products are better consumed, contributing to increasing income and promoting regional economic development.

However, to promote more balanced development, practical solutions are needed to support local businesses to overcome difficulties and promote advantages. Local manufacturing enterprises should proactively participate in trade events, seek cooperation opportunities and update new technological solutions to meet market needs.

Meanwhile, export organizations and businesses, such as Amazon Global Selling, OSB (Alibaba.com authorized agent), Ratraco Solutions, BIDV Bank, and Vietnam Coconut Association, all agree that e-commerce is an effective export channel, helping to reduce costs, expand markets quickly, and connect directly with global consumers.

However, there are also major barriers such as: logistics issues and international shipping costs; language barriers, cultural differences and complex legal systems in each destination market all create additional difficulties.
