Trieu Son district is considered the capital of kumquat growing in Thanh Hoa province with an area of nearly 50 hectares, concentrated in the communes of Hop Ly, Hop Tien, Trieu Thanh, Van Son, Tho Tan...
According to kumquat growers, at this time of year they go to the fields to fertilize and trim their plants. However, this year, since the end of October, traders from everywhere have been coming to deposit their orders. Many garden owners have run out of stock to sell by this time.
Mr. Le Thanh The (born in 1982, village 3, Hop Tien commune) said that his family has more than 3 sao with 600 kumquat trees. At this time last year, his family had not sold any trees. But this year, up to this point, his family has sold more than 500 trees.
“Traders came to deposit to buy trees since the end of October. Within a week, my family sold almost all of the garden. Every day, we sell hundreds of trees,” said Mr. The.
According to Mr. The, with the number of trees in his garden, like every year, it takes until close to Tet (around the beginning of the 12th lunar month) for traders to come and buy. This year, the kumquats were sold early, partly because the trees were beautiful and had many fruits. Another reason is that this year, floods everywhere caused many peach and kumquat villages in the North to have a bad harvest, so traders came to buy early.
“The selling price this year is higher than last year because the fruit is large, even and beautiful. Up to this point, my family’s kumquat garden has sold and earned about 500 million VND,” Mr. The shared.
Mr. Le Minh Tuan's family (village 3, Hop Tien) said that his family has more than 800 kumquat trees, and has sold more than 700 trees. Among the trees sold, there was a trader who ordered 300 trees at a time. On average, each tree costs from 450,000 VND to 1.2 million VND.
“The closer to Tet, the higher the price of kumquat trees. I plan to keep about 100 trees for retail sale. My family is expected to earn about 700 million VND from this year’s kumquat crop, and after deducting all expenses, there will be half left over,” Mr. Tuan shared.
Mr. Le Minh Son (a trader in Thanh Hoa City) said that he has been in the business of selling ornamental plants for Tet for many years. In previous years, at this time, he only visited the garden. However, this year, because traders from everywhere came to buy plants early, he was forced to pay a deposit in advance.
“I was afraid that there would be no more kumquat trees left before Tet, so I had to deposit 200 kumquat trees from two garden owners a month ago. I don’t know how much profit I will make, but the market for ornamental trees for Tet this year is predicted to be “sold out”, so I had to buy early. I had just paid the deposit but another trader came to ask to buy my garden,” Mr. Son shared.
A leader of Trieu Son district said that the district has nearly 50 hectares of kumquat trees. This year, kumquats have a good harvest and good prices, so kumquat farmers are very excited. In communes with a lot of kumquat trees, most gardeners have sold almost all of their kumquat trees.
