Breakthrough research in the treatment of high blood pressure
In a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine , scientists have demonstrated that a new drug can help reduce high blood pressure in six months, with just a single injection without the need for oral medication.
A new drug could help lower high blood pressure in six months, with just one injection
The new drug, called Zilebesiran, developed by US-based company Alnylam, is given as an injection.
The drug works by deactivating the gene responsible for producing the hormone angiotensinogen - a hormone that narrows blood vessels, thereby reducing high blood pressure in 6 months. This is really good news for many people who have to take pills every day but easily forget.
The study, led by Dr Akshay Desai, a cardiologist and director of the Cardiomyopathy and Heart Failure Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, conducted phase I clinical trials at four sites in the UK.
The initial trial involved 80 people who received a single injection of Zilebesiran under their skin, while 32 people received a placebo injection containing no active ingredient. The results were impressive, with those who received the injection experiencing a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure – the top number in their blood pressure – that lasted for up to six months. Harvard's latest discovery on how to eat can increase life expectancy by 25%
New research, presented at the American Dietetic Association's flagship annual conference - NUTRITION 2023, taking place from July 22 to 25 in Boston (USA), has found that an environmentally friendly diet can help increase life expectancy by 25%.
Accordingly, eating more environmentally friendly foods can help you live longer and healthier.
Environmentally friendly diet could increase lifespan by 25%
Research adds to a growing body of evidence that environmentally friendly foods provide dual benefits for both human health and environmental health.
These environmentally friendly foods include whole grains, fruits, non-starchy vegetables, nuts, and unsaturated fats. In contrast, foods such as eggs, red meat, and processed meat can be harmful to the environment and human health.
Researchers from Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health (USA) analyzed the health status of more than 100,000 people, followed for more than 30 years, from 1986 - 2018.
During the study period, more than 47,000 people died.
The results found that those who adhered best to the pro-environment diet had a 25% lower risk of death from all causes than those who adhered least. Readers can read more about this article on the health page on July 26 .
Expert: Eating this soup every day is very good for diabetics
There is a leaf that has insulin-like properties in reducing blood sugar levels, diabetics should cook it in soup and eat it daily, revealed Dr. V Mohan, Head of Diabetes Department at Dr. Mohan Diabetes Speciality Centre, Chennai (India).
Dr V Mohan says: Certain plants contain natural compounds that help control blood sugar levels. Among them, Moringa leaves are effective in lowering blood sugar in pre-diabetic and diabetic patients .
Moringa leaves are effective in lowering blood sugar in prediabetic and diabetic patients
However, this effect is lost when heated to 98°C. That is why it is not advisable to overcook the leaves. This also helps retain the fiber, which helps you feel full longer, slows down digestion and controls blood sugar spikes immediately after meals.
Studies have shown that Moringa is rich in fiber, fatty acids and antioxidants, which play a role in improving fasting blood sugar levels, preventing diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
Moringa leaves increase insulin production, improve glucose sensitivity and uptake by muscles and liver, and reduce the amount of glucose absorbed by the small intestine.
The reason why Moringa has this effect is because it contains isothiocyanate, which helps delay the onset of diabetes. Start your day with health news to see more content of this article!
