Exchange rate developments in the world market
The US Dollar Index (DXY) measuring the greenback's fluctuations against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF) increased by 0.28% to 108.32.
The dollar rose after US President Donald Trump pledged to impose 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports, while the Canadian dollar, Japanese yen, euro and British pound all weakened on concerns about the impact of any new trade tariffs.
The Japanese Yen fell on concerns that Japan could also face tariffs from the US.
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba expressed optimism on February 9 that his country could avoid higher US tariffs.
At the same time, he affirmed that President Donald Trump recognized Japan's large investment in the US as well as what Japan has done for the US.
Earlier, Mr. Trump said he would impose a new 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imported into the US, in addition to the existing metal tariffs. This decision was made after the US leader announced plans to announce tariffs on many countries earlier last week.
The Canadian dollar fell 0.11% to 1.4307 CAD/USD, after earlier hitting 1.4379. Meanwhile, the US dollar gained 0.38% to 151.97 Japanese yen.
The euro fell 0.2 percent to $1.0306. The United States is the second-largest market for European Union (EU) steel exports.
The pound fell 0.36% to $1.2364. A spokesman for Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on February 10 that Britain had not received details of US President Donald Trump's proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum and would continue to cooperate with the Trump administration. The US is Britain's second-largest steel export market after the EU.
