China's Y-20 transport aircraft duo

In a sign of the strengthening military ties between Beijing and Moscow, two Chinese air force Y-20 aircraft were spotted by satellite at the Anadyr airport in Chukotka in Russia's Far East on July 24.
The South China Morning Post cited an analysis published by the University of Tokyo (Japan) on August 2 showing that the appearance of the Y-20 duo took place on the same day that Chinese H-6K bombers participated in a joint patrol with two Russian Tu-95MS bombers in the Chukchi Sea and the Bering Sea, the northern edge of the Pacific Ocean bordering the Arctic.
The joint patrol mission on July 24 marked the first time Russia and China have coordinated the deployment of bombers near the US state of Alaska, a signal that bilateral military ties are increasingly close.
At that time, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) announced that it had scrambled aircraft to follow two Russian bombers and two Chinese bombers flying near Alaska, marking the first time Russia and China were tracked while operating together in the region.
The War Zone reported that Russian and Chinese aircraft passed through the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) around Alaska (USA) on July 24.
This was the first time the H-6 or any Chinese bomber had appeared in this part of the world. At the time, The War Zone suggested that the pair of H-6Ks likely took off from a Russian base.
A new report from the University of Tokyo analyzed that the H-6K bomber, with a range of about 6,000 km, cannot make the round trip from China to the Bering Sea, so it can only take off from a nearby Russian airfield.
“Therefore, it is highly likely that the H-6K was deployed from a base in Russia to the Arctic,” the report said.
To prove the above argument, the University of Tokyo team used high-resolution optical satellites to scan the surrounding airports, and discovered two large Chinese transport aircraft, Y-20, at Anadyr airport.
“They are believed to have come to support the H-6K,” the report concluded.
