Specifically, patient HTM (40 years old), Lao nationality, was hospitalized with high fever, abdominal cramps in the hip area, large abdomen on the right side, the size of an 8-month pregnant woman.
According to the patient, this condition has been occurring for 10 years but due to economic difficulties, the patient did not go to the hospital. For the past 3 years, the patient's abdomen has been getting bigger and bigger.
Through the examination combined with test results, ultrasound and abdominal CT scan, the doctors discovered that the patient's kidney had grade 4 hydronephrosis due to ureteral stones (kidney tissue was only like a piece of paper) accompanied by symptoms of infection. Patient M. was diagnosed with grade 4 pyonephrosis in the right kidney, losing function.

On July 12, 2024, the patient had his right kidney, which was filled with pus and lost its function, removed by Dr. Phan Khanh Viet, Head of General Surgery Department, and other doctors and surgeons.
During the surgery, due to the inflammation and adhesions along with the large kidney, the relative changes in anatomy made it difficult for the doctors to separate it. From the patient's right kidney, 4.5 liters of pus were aspirated.
Speaking to reporters, Dr. Phan Khanh Viet, Head of the General Surgery Department, said that the endoscopic surgery was successful. Thanks to the endoscopic surgery, the patient recovered sooner and is now able to sit up and walk lightly.
Through this, Dr. Phan Khanh Viet recommends that people should have regular check-ups or go to the hospital for examination when there are unusual symptoms, to avoid the condition becoming worse.
