The authorities in Freiburg, Baden-Württemberg (Germany), have officially adjusted the menus at kindergartens and primary schools, with all dishes being vegetarian.

Previously, meals for children in the city's kindergartens and primary schools had two main menu options: meat and fish. According to authorities, the decision to adjust the menu aims to make school meals as healthy, sustainable, and delicious as possible for all students and school staff. The menu will be adjusted throughout the school year to better meet the specific needs of group meals with diverse tastes.
Freiburg's decision has sparked a nationwide debate about proper nutrition for children. When the city council approved the decision last October, the Baden-Württemberg state Ministry of Agriculture disagreed, arguing that a balanced diet must include meat.
However, Gertrud Winkler, a nutritionist at the University of Albstadt-Sigmaringen (Germany), welcomed the Freiburg city government's "forward-looking" decision.
