The forum aims to encourage the development of environmentally friendly raw materials and products; develop sustainable production and consumption models, towards the development of a circular economy in Vietnam.

Delegates share at the forum

Mr. Do Tien Sy, General Director of Voice of Vietnam, said that in the face of increasingly serious environmental pollution challenges, many countries in the world have proactively changed their development strategies, moving towards a sustainable economy - a circular economy. The transition from a linear economic model to a circular economic model is necessary to move towards a sustainable economy, using resources and energy efficiently, low carbon, strong and competitive.

At this forum, the organizers hope that policy makers, managers, experts and businesses participating in the forum will focus on discussing urgent and meaningful issues towards producing environmentally friendly products. From there, orient and change consumer behavior towards sustainable consumption in Vietnam.

Improve people's quality of life

Mr. Le Trieu Dung, Chairman of the National Competition Commission, said that promoting sustainable production and consumption on the basis of innovation, creativity, practice and development of sustainable production and consumption models; promoting sustainable lifestyles and improving people's quality of life, aiming to develop a circular economy is an important goal clearly stated by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 889/QD-TTg.

Most recently, on June 20, the National Assembly passed the Law on Consumer Protection (amended), which clarified the definition of sustainable consumption and stipulated important policies to promote sustainable production and consumption in Vietnam.

In addition, many campaigns, calls and specific actions from management agencies, domestic and foreign organizations, especially from the business community and people have contributed to significantly changing awareness and initially spreading the movement of sustainable production and consumption in society.

According to Mr. Le Trieu Dung, sustainable production and consumption are practical and mandatory trends for the sustainable development of the economy and society. In this process, businesses and consumers are two important subjects and have close interactions with each other. To ensure the effectiveness of activities, raising awareness of the subjects of activities is a fundamental solution, determining success and bringing sustainable results.

Nielsen IQ's 2023 survey shows that 49% of consumers bring their own bags and use recycled bags; 47% only buy necessary items to avoid waste; 45% of consumers are conscious of sorting recyclable waste and saving electricity.

The survey also highlighted consumers’ expectations of businesses for initiatives and practical actions to improve the environment. Accordingly, 38% of consumers rated businesses’ initiatives and practical actions to improve the environment as extremely important.

A survey on green consumption trends from the perspective of consumers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City by Infage Vietnam shows that green consumption is becoming an inevitable issue. Consumers are aware of the need for environmental protection activities and change their behaviors and habits to have positive impacts and protect the environment.
