Variety of playgrounds

Chess has been developing quite strongly and is popular among officials, civil servants, public employees and people of Quang Tri. The clearest evidence is the many chess tournaments organized by all levels, sectors and individuals. The most exciting are the chess tournaments held annually on the occasion of Lunar New Year, which not only create a practical and useful playground for enthusiasts but also become a beautiful cultural feature at the beginning of the new spring.

The province has many large-scale, high-quality chess tournaments held annually in the form of socialized physical education and sports (ST&T), contributing significantly to the development of this sport. Notably, the Chess Tournament for Block 2, Khe Sanh town, Huong Hoa district, is held annually on the 5th day of the Lunar New Year.

Mr. Hoang Minh Duc, Head of the Block 2 Chess Club, said that in order to meet the needs of entertainment and improve chess skills, 22 chess lovers in the block agreed to establish the Block 2 Chess Club to connect and develop their passion.

The club has created a suitable location at Hoa Vien cafe for members to participate in regular activities; organized many internal tournaments, notably the traditional Chinese Chess tournament to celebrate the Party and celebrate Spring, which has been maintained for the past 11 years, and a number of open tournaments for everyone to have the opportunity to exchange and compete. From this playground, many club members have improved their knowledge, skills, tactics, and competitive spirit.

Every New Year, many chess players eagerly set out to compete in district and city chess tournaments held annually.

Chess player Ngo Van Loc, Gio My commune, Gio Linh district, said: “For chess players, the greatest joy is to participate in tournaments to have the opportunity to exchange and compete. I and many chess players in Gio Linh district are very happy that the Center for Culture, Information (CIT) - Sports and Tourism of Gio Linh district always cares about organizing annual chess tournaments on the occasion of the traditional Tet holiday of the nation. This is truly a useful playground for us to satisfy our passion and have many interesting experiences with our opponents in the competition.”

According to Hoang Duc Bao, Deputy Director of the Trieu Phong District Culture, Sports and Tourism Center, in recent years, Trieu Phong District has implemented many positive solutions to promote the development of the chess training and competition movement in the district and select high-achieving athletes to join the District Chess Team to participate in provincial chess tournaments.

The district focuses on maintaining the organization of Chinese chess tournaments every Tet holiday, while encouraging and supporting localities and Chinese chess clubs to organize internal tournaments to create conditions for athletes to meet, exchange and share expertise in competition. Recently, the district successfully organized the Spring Chinese Chess Tournament of Giap Thin - 2024, gathering 40 players to compete, which was considered a large-scale and high-quality tournament.

Need to be energized...

Chess is considered an intellectual sport that has existed for a long time. This is a sport that requires little physical strength but requires a lot of concentration, perseverance, creativity and logical thinking. Through psychological training, the ability to calculate and judge while playing chess will bring players many benefits, helping to relieve stress and train memory.

This sport does not require much investment in terms of money, just a chess set and everyone can play anytime, anywhere. The joy of playing chess does not stop at the two players but also spreads to the spectators. Therefore, the connection and exchange of friends through chess is clearly shown.

The bright spot in the development of chess in Quang Tri province is that it has received much attention from all levels, sectors, localities and support from the people through the organization of many tournaments.

Notably, in the past 10 years, Chinese chess has been included in the provincial Sports Festival; some localities such as Dong Ha City and Gio Linh, Trieu Phong, Vinh Linh, Cam Lo districts... annually organize Chinese chess tournaments in early spring; many Chinese chess clubs organize internal and expanded Chinese chess tournaments, creating a playground for hundreds of players inside and outside the province.

Chess clubs and groups online are also developing quite well, attracting a large number of members. These exciting and attractive activities have had a strong impact on the development of the chess movement in a profound way throughout the province.

Mr. Phan Anh Tuan, chess coach, Provincial Sports Training and Competition Center, said that currently, the chess movement is developing quite widely in all regions of the province. The number of chess players is increasing, estimated at about 3,000 people who know how to play, of which about 500 people participate in many chess tournaments; over 100 chess clubs were established on the voluntary spirit of the people with the goal of connecting and developing passion.

A strong lever that impacts the development of the chess movement is that many tournaments from provincial to grassroots levels are organized; many people with expertise and passion for chess have invited experts and good chess coaches to Quang Tri to guide and support the organization of grassroots tournaments, exchange and share experiences to improve techniques and competition tactics. Some good players in Quang Tri have participated in competitions and achieved many achievements in chess tournaments nationwide...

However, to develop sustainably and gradually improve the quality of the chess movement, it is necessary to have the attention and support of all levels, sectors, localities and businesses. The biggest wish of the chess community in Quang Tri is that the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism organizes an annual provincial chess tournament; provides additional support in terms of expertise, professionalism and experience in organizing tournaments, and establishing clubs.

Units and localities seriously re-evaluate the quality of the chess movement, thereby outlining clear plans and directions for the goal of developing the movement in a broad and comprehensive manner, contributing to the colorful picture of the province's sports.
