Urging Hungary to soon recognize the Vietnamese community as an ethnic minority

(Chinhphu.vn) - Meeting with the Vietnamese community in Hungary, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh acknowledged, thanked and highly appreciated the contributions to the country of overseas Vietnamese in general and overseas Vietnamese in Hungary in particular; requested the Embassy to actively promote so that Hungary soon recognizes the Vietnamese community in Hungary as an ethnic minority.

During his official visit to Hungary, on the evening of January 19 (local time), in Budapest, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife visited and met with officials and staff of the Embassy and representatives of the Vietnamese community in Hungary.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Hungary Nguyen Thi Bich Thao said that the Vietnamese community in Hungary has about 6,000 people and is on the rise. The Vietnamese community in Hungary mainly lives, works and studies in the capital city of Bundapest and surrounding areas.

According to the Ambassador, Vietnamese people work in Hungary in the fields of agriculture, food processing, construction, etc. In particular, with Hungary providing 200 scholarships to Vietnam every year, the number of Vietnamese students studying in Hungary is increasing. Along with the cooperation activities of Vietnamese ministries, branches and localities with Hungary, the Vietnamese community in Hungary has many activities to connect and cooperate, promote the image of the country and people of Vietnam; connect the community, preserve the national cultural identity. They all comply with the law and integrate well with the local community; always unite, help each other and look towards their homeland and country.

At the meeting, Vietnamese people in Hungary expressed their joy and confidence in the country's remarkable development and increasingly bright future, as well as the ever-growing relationship between Vietnam and Hungary, especially with the very successful visit of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to Hungary. In particular, they were moved by the attention and care of the Party and State for the Vietnamese community abroad, including the Vietnamese community in Hungary. Representatives of the Vietnamese community in Hungary hope that the Party and State will continue to support and connect movements and activities at home and abroad in general and in Hungary in particular; continue to promote Vietnamese culture, including teaching and learning Vietnamese abroad; propose to Hungary to recognize the Vietnamese community in Hungary as a Hungarian ethnic minority; guide and support the issuance of Vietnamese identity cards for overseas Vietnamese; encourage, facilitate and support overseas Vietnamese to participate in a number of specific tasks and projects, contributing to the construction and development of the country... After the Ministers and members of the working delegation informed the Vietnamese community in Hungary about the situation of various aspects of work related to overseas Vietnamese and partially answered their requests, speaking at the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh reiterated the content of Resolution No. 36 of the Politburo on work with overseas Vietnamese, with the view that "the overseas Vietnamese community is an inseparable part of the Vietnamese ethnic community".

The Prime Minister said that in recent times, especially in 2023, the Government and the National Assembly have taken many specific and practical actions to continue implementing Resolution No. 36. This includes removing obstacles and meeting the people's requests on policies related to identity, visa policies, real estate ownership, etc. The Party and the State will continue to carry out other specific tasks and solutions according to the Resolution of the Politburo. The Prime Minister commended, highly appreciated and congratulated the Vietnamese community in Hungary for being united, constantly growing, maturing, making many contributions to the host country, being highly appreciated and contributing to the country. In particular, the Vietnamese community in Hungary has made efforts to promote the image of the country and Vietnamese people in Hungary, especially preserving the national cultural identity, including teaching and learning Vietnamese in Hungary. On this occasion, on behalf of the Party and State leaders, the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to the overseas Vietnamese community in general and in Hungary in particular for their contributions to the cause of national construction and defense, including financial support, vaccines, and medical supplies to prevent and fight the COVID-19 pandemic, contributing to the recovery and socio-economic development of the country in recent times. Informing the people about the Vietnam-Hungary relationship, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that the traditional relationship between the two countries is developing very well, political trust is increasingly high; other areas of cooperation such as economy, education, defense, security, etc. are constantly developing. In particular, Hungary highly appreciates the Vietnamese community in Hungary. In the achievements of the relationship between the two countries, there is a significant contribution from the Vietnamese community in Hungary. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that due to the growth and contributions of the Vietnamese community in Hungary, during this working trip he repeatedly requested the Hungarian Government to continue to support and create favorable conditions for Vietnamese people to do business, live and study, including recognizing the Vietnamese community in Hungary as an ethnic minority of Hungary.

The Prime Minister hopes that the people will continue to unite, build an increasingly stable and developing community; become a solid bridge for the friendly relations between the two countries and the people of the two countries; preserve the national identity and homeland; educate children about their roots, and maintain the Vietnamese language. Affirming that the Party and State will continue to research and perfect policies to attract talents, as well as support scientific research for overseas Vietnamese, the Prime Minister asked Vietnamese scientists and researchers abroad in general and in Hungary in particular to participate in the ecosystem of science, technology, and innovation, including the National Innovation Center and the construction of an International Financial Center in Ho Chi Minh City... The Prime Minister asked the Vietnamese Embassy in Hungary to continue to pay attention and do better work for overseas Vietnamese. In particular, it is necessary to establish a complete database of Vietnamese people in the host country; "The Embassy must regularly take full care of the material and spiritual life of the Vietnamese community in Hungary; regularly connect with the community, actively support community activities and promote Hungary to soon recognize the Vietnamese in Hungary as an ethnic minority of Hungary," the Prime Minister reminded.
