Promoting cooperation between the Antofagasta region, Chile and localities of Vietnam

From March 19-22, a delegation from the Vietnamese Embassy in Chile led by Ambassador Nguyen Viet Cuong visited and worked in the Antofagasta region, northern Chile. The delegation included Defense Attaché Nguyen Thai Duong and the Embassy's economic officer.

During the working trip, the delegation had an important working session with Governor of Antofagasta Ricardo Heriberto Díaz Cortés.

At the meeting, the two sides exchanged information on potential cooperation in the fields of economy, culture,education and tourism.

Governor Ricardo Heriberto Díaz Cortés particularly emphasized the region's strengths in the mining industry with the world's largest copper mines such as Chuquicamata and Escondida, and lithium potential; proposed studying the possibility of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Antofagasta and a locality in Vietnam.

Ambassador Nguyen Viet Cuong met with the President of the Antofagasta Region Industrial Association.

On this occasion, the delegation also had a working session with Chairman of the Antofagasta Industrial Association Lucas Martinich Heinrich and representatives of local businesses.

The two sides discussed in detail opportunities for trade and investment cooperation, especially in the fields of mining, renewable energy and logistics. Many potential import and export items between the two sides were mentioned.

Antofagasta is an important economic center of Chile with strengths in mining industry, renewable energy and tourism. This region owns unique natural landscapes such as Atacama Desert, Moon Valley and world-class astronomical observatories.

In terms of education, Antofagasta has prestigious universities such as the University of Antofagasta and the Universidad Católica del Norte, specializing in engineering and environmental sciences.

This working trip is the first step for both sides to explore the possibility of promoting cooperation in the fields of economics, technology and trade. The Vietnamese Embassy in Chile will continue to coordinate with the Antofagasta government and businesses to implement specific cooperation contents in the coming time.
