On the morning of July 14, in Canberra, Australia, General Angus Campbell, Commander of the Australian Defense Force, presided over the welcoming ceremony for Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Tan Cuong, member of the Party Central Committee, member of the Central Military Commission, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, and Deputy Minister of National Defense of Vietnam, on an official visit to Australia.
After the welcoming ceremony, General Angus Campbell met with Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Tan Cuong. Warmly welcoming Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Tan Cuong and the high-ranking military delegation of the Vietnam People's Army to their official visit to Australia, General Angus Campbell said that the visit is even more meaningful in the context of the two countries celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations (1973-2023). General Angus Campbell believes that the visit will contribute to strengthening the cooperative relationship between the two armies.

For his part, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Tan Cuong emphasized that over the past time, the Vietnam-Australia strategic partnership has developed positively, increasingly in-depth and substantively in many fields, in accordance with signed cooperation documents, contributing to peace, stability and common development. After the meeting, the two sides held talks. Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Tan Cuong and General Angus Campbell agreed that the cooperation between the two countries' armies in recent times has been implemented in accordance with the 2010 Memorandum of Understanding on Defense Cooperation and the 2018 Joint Vision Statement on Promoting Defense Relations, achieving outstanding results in the following areas: Exchange of delegations at all levels, especially high-level delegations; consultation and dialogue mechanisms; training; United Nations peacekeeping; Covid-19 prevention and control...
Regarding multilateral cooperation, Vietnam and Australia are both active members of the ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting Plus (ADMM+) and regularly consult and support each other at regional forums. Vietnam supports the ASEAN-Australia comprehensive strategic partnership and highly appreciates the ASEAN-Australia Informal Defense Ministers Meeting mechanism.
To further promote cooperation between the two armies, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Tan Cuong and General Angus Campbell agreed to strengthen cooperation, focusing on the following areas: Exchange of delegations at all levels and high-level contacts; consultation and dialogue mechanisms; United Nations peacekeeping; human resource training; military medicine, experience exchange between armies and services; overcoming the consequences of war. At the same time, the two sides will study the possibility of expanding cooperation in areas such as cyber security, defense industry; strengthen consultation and coordination at multilateral mechanisms, especially the ADMM+ expert groups, to contribute to promoting Vietnam's international defense integration and strengthening the ASEAN-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
At the talks, the two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of mutual concern; stressed the importance of maintaining peace, security, safety, freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea, and resolving disputes by peaceful means in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

On this occasion, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Tan Cuong respectfully invited General Angus Campbell to pay an official visit to Vietnam at a suitable time. General Angus Campbell happily accepted the invitation and said he would arrange to visit Vietnam as soon as possible.
