To pass the group stage, U17 Vietnam must beat U17 Uzbekistan and wait for a favorable result from the match between U17 Japan and U17 India. However, coach Hoang Anh Tuan and his students failed to achieve the necessary conditions.
U17 Uzbekistan showed their superiority in the first half. The Central Asian team dominated the ball possession with a rate of over 70%. U17 Uzbekistan players pressed the field and continuously made attacks on the flanks, putting U17 Vietnam under great pressure.
Vietnam U17 (white shirt) did not win any match at the 2023 AFC U17 Championship.
The basic coordination was practiced over and over again by the young Uzbekistan players and they succeeded in the 25th minute. Shodiyor Shodiboev's shot hit the crossbar and post before going into the goal. U17 Uzbekistan led 1-0 and made the disadvantage of U17 Vietnam even greater.
The goal made coach Hoang Anh Tuan's players lose their spirit. U17 Vietnam could hardly control the ball to attack. In the rare times the ball was brought close to the opponent's penalty area, the U17 Vietnam forwards handled it hastily and lacked observation and connection with their teammates.
After the break, coach Hoang Anh Tuan made some personnel adjustments. U17 Vietnam played better and created some chances. However, Nguyen Cong Phuong and his teammates still lacked composure in decisive moments.
Meanwhile, U17 Uzbekistan took the initiative to play defense. The superior physical factor helped the Central Asian team control the contested situations and the high balls well. At the end of the match, with their physical strength declining, U17 Vietnam could not create any surprises.
Losing 0-1 to U17 Uzbekistan, U17 Vietnam finished bottom of Group D and was eliminated from the 2023 U17 Asian tournament.
