The Prime Minister requested Can Tho City to proactively coordinate with ministries and branches to resolve difficulties in implementing airport investment and submit a report before November 25.
On October 28, the Government Office sent a document to the People's Committee of Can Tho city and a number of ministries and branches, conveying the Prime Minister's opinion on resolving problems related to Can Tho International Airport (Can Tho airport).

The Prime Minister requested Can Tho City to proactively coordinate with ministries, branches and agencies to resolve difficulties and obstacles in the process of implementing investment in Can Tho airport. Issues beyond the authority must be reported to the Prime Minister before November 25, 2024.
The Prime Minister also requested the Ministries of Transport, National Defense, Finance and the State Capital Management Committee at Enterprises to guide and support Can Tho in implementation, and report before November 15, 2024.
Previously, in September 2024, Can Tho City People's Committee reported to the Prime Minister on investment in upgrading Can Tho airport.
Can Tho Airport is managed by Vietnam Airports Corporation. Currently, the airport has not built a cargo terminal and has not completed the construction of essential airport facilities according to the plan.
According to the detailed planning of Can Tho airport approved by the Ministry of Transport, there are still some functional zones serving the development of domestic and international freight transport that have not been built yet.
The reason is that there is still a problem with the existing site of Radar Station C50 of Regiment 294 - Division 367 - Air Defense - Air Force stationed on the land planned to build a civil aviation area.
According to the planning, Can Tho airport still has some functional areas that have not been built.
In February 2024, the Ministry of National Defense issued an official dispatch responding to the matter of moving the radar station to a new location to hand over defense land to deploy the construction and expansion of Can Tho airport (agreed upon by the Ministry of National Defense).
The Ministry of Defense has also sent an official dispatch requesting the locality to hand over about 15 hectares of land in Long Hung ward, O Mon district to build a new radar station.
Can Tho then planned a land area of about 11 hectares for the construction of a new radar station. Currently, the Ministry of National Defense is continuing to update the above land area into the planning and use of national defense land for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050.
However, up to now, the locality has not completed the procedures to reclaim the old land, hand over the new land to the Ministry of National Defense and ensure funding to build the radar station at the new location. Regarding this issue, the People's Committee of Can Tho City said that it will review and soon hand over the land to relocate the radar station.
According to the People's Committee of Can Tho city, up to now , the city has implemented a project to socialize investment and exploitation of Can Tho airport as a basis to call for businesses to participate in management, exploitation and investment to completely upgrade the airport according to the plan.
However, there are still difficult issues such as land management; management of airport infrastructure assets; investment, management and exploitation models of airports; and implementation procedures.
Currently, the Ministry of Transport is also developing a general project on mobilizing social capital to invest in airport infrastructure and has reported to the Government Standing Committee in September 2023 for consideration and comments to complete and submit to competent authorities for approval.
After the general project is approved, the Ministry of Transport will continue to coordinate with localities to research, build, complete, and plan to hand over to Can Tho for investment and exploitation management to serve as a basis for mobilizing capital to implement investment in upgrading the airport according to the plan.
According to the plan, in the 2021-2030 period, Can Tho will upgrade the infrastructure of the airport and construct essential works of the existing international airport with an area of about 389 hectares, with an expected capacity of 7 million passengers/year.
After 2030, Can Tho airport will be expanded to a total planned area of about 729 hectares, with a new civil aviation area and a runway being built, with an expected capacity of 12 million passengers/year.
