Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh meets with the President of the Republic of Burundi

On the afternoon of April 4, at the Government headquarters, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with President of the Republic of Burundi Évariste Ndayishimiye, who is on an official visit to Vietnam from April 3-6.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh was delighted to meet again and welcome the President, his wife and the high-ranking delegation to an official visit to Vietnam, emphasizing that the visit is particularly meaningful as it takes place in the context of the two countries looking forward to celebrating the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations in 2025 and at a time when Vietnam is happily celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South, National Reunification and the 80th anniversary of the founding of the country.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh congratulated the important achievements that the country and people of Burundi have made under the leadership of President Évariste Ndayishimiye and expressed his support for Burundi to successfully implement the National Development Plan with the goal of making Burundi an emerging country by 2040 and a developed country by 2060.

The President of Burundi was delighted to visit the brotherly country of Vietnam, to meet Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh again and to witness with his own eyes the outstanding and historic achievements of Vietnam after nearly 40 years of Doi Moi. The President of Burundi highly appreciated and congratulated the Vietnamese Government on the recent socio-economic management results, contributing to the successful implementation of the set targets, and increasingly improving the lives of the people.

Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye affirmed that Vietnam is a close friend and trusted partner of Burundi in the Asian region; thanked Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh for his strong leadership and commitment in promoting bilateral relations. The President highly appreciated the activities and practical contributions of Lumitel Telecommunications Joint Venture (co-developed by Viettel Group), affirmed his support for Lumitel's effective operations, and wished Lumitel to expand 5G coverage in Burundi.

The two leaders agreed to promote delegation exchanges at all levels; strengthen trade and investment cooperation, science and technology, and expand cooperation to new areas such as agriculture, mining, tourism, infrastructure construction, construction materials, hydropower, etc. Based on the experience of international integration in nearly 40 years of Doi Moi, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed that Vietnam is ready to share experiences with Burundi in areas of mutual interest and strength such as building innovation policies, international integration, industrialization, agricultural development, production experience, animal husbandry, education and training.

The two leaders welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on political consultation between the two Foreign Ministries and the Framework Agreement on cooperation between the two Governments, and affirmed that the agencies of the two countries will continue to actively negotiate to soon sign more documents to complete the legal framework, creating favorable conditions for promoting bilateral cooperation. In addition, the two sides need to enhance mutual understanding, cooperate in training, exchange and connect people and businesses of the two countries to exchange information on culture, people, business practices, cooperation opportunities, etc., creating a premise to promote bilateral economic cooperation.

Regarding multilateral cooperation, the two sides agreed to strengthen coordination and support each other's positions on regional and international issues at international forums and organizations, contributing to maintaining peace, stability and cooperation in each region and in the world. Accordingly, the Prime Minister asked Burundi to support ASEAN's stance on resolving maritime disputes by peaceful means, on the basis of respect for international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982) and ASEAN's efforts to build the East Sea into a sea of ​​peace, stability, cooperation and sustainable development.
