On the morning of October 9, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and leaders of ASEAN countries attended the opening session of the 44th ASEAN Summit in Vientiane (Laos).

After the opening session, the Prime Minister and ASEAN leaders attended the plenary session of the 44th ASEAN Summit and the retreat session of the 45th ASEAN Summit.

This afternoon, the head of the Vietnamese Government will join ASEAN leaders in dialogue events with representatives of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA); dialogue with representatives of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC); and dialogue with representatives of ASEAN Youth. The 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and related conferences taking place from October 8 to 11 are the most important series of high-level activities of ASEAN in the year, with the participation of leaders of ASEAN countries, Timor-Leste and 10 ASEAN partners, along with many invited guests who are representatives of international and regional organizations.

According to the agenda and program of activities, the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and related summits will discuss many important contents, including measures to promote regional connectivity and self-reliance in the spirit of this year's theme "ASEAN: Promoting Connectivity and Self-Resilience". Consolidating the process of building the ASEAN Community towards the goal of deeper integration and preparing for ASEAN's higher development in the future, deepening relations with partners on the basis of effectiveness, substance, mutual benefit and discussing the international and regional situation.

At the meeting, the two leaders were pleased with the strong development of the Vietnam - Philippines Strategic Partnership in all areas in recent times.

The two sides agreed to continue to deepen the bilateral relationship in a practical, sustainable and long-term manner, contributing positively to a strong ASEAN Community, for peace, stability and sustainable development in the region and the world. Discussing the key cooperation areas in the coming time, the Prime Minister suggested that the two sides continue to effectively promote existing cooperation mechanisms, especially the Joint Committee on Bilateral Cooperation; promote agricultural and economic-trade cooperation commensurate with the potential of the two countries, further open the market for each other's goods, and soon achieve the goal of increasing bilateral trade turnover to 10 billion USD by 2025. The Prime Minister also suggested that the two sides actively research and expand cooperation to new areas, serving strategic breakthroughs such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, the Internet of Things, digital economy, green economy, energy transition, and development of electric vehicle ecosystems. President Marcos also asked Vietnam to continue supporting the Philippines in ensuring food security and effectively implementing the Memorandums of Understanding on agricultural cooperation and rice trade cooperation signed earlier this year. He highly appreciated Vingroup's electric vehicle development projects in the Philippines as well as cooperation projects between enterprises of the two countries in high-tech fields.
