According to VNA special correspondent, on the morning of November 18 local time, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the 2024 G20 Summit opened with the theme "Building a fair world and a sustainable planet" under the chairmanship of Brazilian President Lula da Silva, G20 President 2024.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh led the Vietnamese delegation to attend the Conference and delivered an important speech, proposing three strategic guarantees for poverty eradication on a global scale.

After 19 times of organization, this year's G20 Summit has gathered the largest participation of leaders ever, including 21 G20 members, 19 guest countries and 15 key international organizations, expected to contribute to promoting multilateralism and enhancing macro-policy coordination in addressing urgent global development challenges.

The conference opened with the Launch of the Global Alliance Against Poverty and a Panel Discussion on the Fight Against Poverty.

Here, Brazilian President Lula da Silva affirmed that “poverty reduction not only ensures social justice but is also a core condition for building a prosperous society and a peaceful world,” and at the same time, announced the list of founding countries of the Alliance, including Vietnam.

At the discussion session, leaders emphasized the role and importance of poverty eradication and promoting inclusive development, and discussed the need to promote solutions to increase financial support for low-income countries to implement poverty reduction projects for more effective sustainable development; and support developing countries to better utilize digital, green and smart development opportunities.

The conference also stressed the importance of addressing gender and ethnic inequalities and supporting vulnerable communities, including indigenous peoples and women, to reduce the global wealth gap.

The leaders agreed that current global challenges can only be addressed through multilateral solutions and noted the importance of reforming global institutions.

Speaking at the discussion session, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh called on countries to have higher political determination, greater resources, and more drastic actions for more specific, practical, and effective programs and projects, because poverty eradication not only has a noble humanitarian significance, but is also one of the most important foundations, directly affecting the assurance of peace, security, and stability globally.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also highlighted Vietnam's achievements as a successful model in poverty reduction. From a poor, backward country, heavily devastated after nearly 40 years of war and 30 years of embargo, with the renovation policy, Vietnam has set a goal of reducing multidimensional and inclusive poverty, along with overcoming shortages in health, education, housing, clean water, and living environment, and thus has reached the target 10 years early in implementing the United Nations Millennium Development Goals; in which the poverty rate has decreased from over 58% in the early 1990s to about 1.9% in 2024. Vietnam has risen to become one of the world's leading agricultural exporters, especially rice.

Affirming that Vietnam will eliminate all temporary and dilapidated houses nationwide by 2025, reaching the target 5 years ahead of schedule, the Prime Minister shared with other countries 3 lessons learned from Vietnam in poverty reduction, which are not to sacrifice social security, progress, social justice and the environment to pursue economic growth alone; especially attach importance to food security and identify agriculture as the pillar of the economy; take people as the center, prioritize investment in people, develop high-quality human resources associated with science, technology and innovation.

On that basis, the Prime Minister proposed three strategic guarantees for global poverty eradication.

Firstly, ensuring peace, stability and development cooperation is a prerequisite for poverty eradication and inclusive development.

According to the Prime Minister, the G20 needs to promote its leading role in ensuring peace, stability and development cooperation, without politicizing science and technology, development issues, especially trade, agriculture and food security.

Second, ensuring that the global agri-food system is efficient, stable, adaptive and resilient to climate change is the long-term foundation.

The Prime Minister called on the G20 to increase technology transfer, technical assistance, preferential finance, and smart governance for developing and underdeveloped countries in the transition to green and sustainable agriculture and support the assurance of food supply chains for low-income countries.

Third is to ensure investment in people, taking education and training and social security as key tasks for building a harmonious, inclusive and sustainable society.

Taking people as the center, subject, goal, driving force and resource for sustainable development; prioritizing resources, building practical, feasible and effective policies for hunger eradication and poverty reduction, "leaving no one behind."

At the end of his speech, the Prime Minister quoted President Ho Chi Minh's conclusion, "Unity is invincible strength" and in that spirit affirmed that Vietnam is committed to upholding multilateralism, close international solidarity, actively and effectively contributing to the common effort to build a world without lasting poverty, a sustainable world. Vietnam is ready to share experiences and coordinate with G20 countries and international organizations to implement South-South and trilateral programs on ensuring food security and fighting global poverty.

The Prime Minister's speech was welcomed and expressed agreement and appreciation by many countries.

On the same afternoon, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the discussion session on "Reforming global governance institutions."

During its G20 Presidency, Brazil issued a Call to Action on Global Governance Reform, the first G20-led document open to all UN member states.

Vietnam is one of the pioneering developing countries supporting the Call, contributing to promoting reforms to make global governance mechanisms more equitable and effective.

The G20 2024 Summit will continue on November 19 with a session on sustainable development and energy transition.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will attend and deliver an important speech at this meeting./.
