This is the first visit to Vietnam by a senior Ethiopian leader since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1976, and also the first high-level delegation exchange between the two countries in seven years.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife went to the car door to welcome Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and his wife. After receiving a bouquet of flowers from the children of Hanoi, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh walked together while the students waved with the national flags of Vietnam and Ethiopia in their hands.

Amidst majestic music, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh invited Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali to inspect the Guard of Honour of the Vietnam People's Army. The two Prime Ministers then introduced to each other the members of the two countries' high-ranking delegations attending the welcoming ceremony; and together witnessed the welcoming parade of the Guard of Honour of the Vietnam People's Army.

After the welcoming ceremony, the two Prime Ministers moved to the Government Office for talks. Before the talks, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali visited a photo exhibition on the country, people and good relations between Vietnam and Ethiopia, organized by the Government Office in coordination with the Vietnam News Agency.

It is expected that during the official visit to Vietnam, along with talks with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, the Ethiopian Prime Minister will meet with the highest leaders of the Vietnamese Party and State; and participate in activities within the framework of the P4G Summit.

The Ethiopian Prime Minister's visit to Vietnam takes place in the context that the two countries are looking forward to celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026. After half a century, the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Ethiopia has developed well. The Communist Party of Vietnam has a good relationship with Ethiopia's ruling party, the Prosperity Party. Ethiopia has recognized Vietnam's market economy since 2014. The two sides regularly support each other at multilateral forums and international organizations.

However, the economic, trade and investment relations between Vietnam and Ethiopia are still modest, not commensurate with the potential and political and diplomatic relations. The two-way trade turnover in the past 4 years has remained at 10 - 15 million USD. Ethiopia has 1 investment project in Vietnam with a total investment capital of 10,000 USD. In the opposite direction, MK Group Company is the only Vietnamese enterprise with a joint venture investment project in the field of smart card production in Ethiopia with a capital contribution of 60% and is promoting cooperation in the field of network security and information security.

The Ethiopian Prime Minister’s visit to Vietnam this time clearly demonstrates the strategic vision and desire of the two countries to elevate and deepen bilateral relations in the new development period. In particular, the two sides will comprehensively review the areas of cooperation, and at the same time exchange directions and shape a more substantive and effective cooperation framework in the coming time, especially in the fields of trade, investment, aviation, science and technology, agriculture, and cyber security; contributing to enhancing the presence and image of Vietnam in the African region, including Ethiopia.

Along with that, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali’s attendance at the P4G Summit demonstrates Ethiopia’s appreciation for Vietnam’s increasingly prominent role in the international arena, as well as its desire to work with Vietnam to promote global initiatives on climate change response, green growth, innovation and sustainable development; vividly demonstrating Vietnam’s spirit of proactive, responsible cooperation and joint development for the common interests of the international community.
