On the evening of January 15, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called US President-elect Donald Trump to thank him for his support in promoting the return of hostages being held in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli Prime Minister's Office said that during the phone call, the two leaders agreed to meet in Washington soon to discuss this and other important issues. Netanyahu also spoke with President Joe Biden.
Earlier, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar appeared to have implicitly confirmed that the country had reached a ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement with the Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip.
Speaking to a Jewish community in Rome, Italy, before cutting short his European trip to return home, Sa'ar said: "We are probably facing a hostage deal... this is a very, very difficult decision that the Israeli Cabinet will have to accept," the Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Earlier, Israeli and Western media quoted sources as saying that a draft of a preliminary ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip had been agreed upon by all parties, including a roadmap for Israel's withdrawal as well as agreements for the exchange of hostages and prisoners between the two sides. The Israeli government will vote on this agreement on January 16 and it is likely that the majority of ministers in the Israeli cabinet will approve it.
Meanwhile, according to the British newspaper Independent on January 15, US President-elect Donald Trump took full credit for reaching the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement.
Mr. Donald Trump declared that the above agreement could only be achieved thanks to his victory in the US presidential election in November 2024, affirming that this victory "signals to the whole world that my administration will seek peace and negotiate agreements to ensure the safety of all Americans and our allies".
The Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement was reached after Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the weekend.
