Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country on August 5.

News agencies such as Reuters and AFP quoted sources as saying that Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on August 5 and left the country, amid massive protests that turned violent in the country.

Speaking the same afternoon, Bangladesh Army Chief of Staff, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, confirmed the above information about Ms. Hasina. He said the army will soon meet with the President to discuss in detail the formation of an interim government .

Calling on protesters to cooperate and stop violence, Mr Waker-Uz-Zaman said: "There is a crisis. I have met with opposition leaders and we have decided to form an interim government. I take full responsibility and promise to protect the lives and property of the people. The demands of the people will be met."

General Waker stressed that a solution to the crisis would be found on the evening of August 5, and said there was no need to impose a curfew or declare a state of emergency.

Previously, in an official statement on August 3, Mr. Waker affirmed that the Bangladesh army always stands side by side with the people.

After news broke that Ms. Hasina had resigned and left the country, Bangladesh's Channel 24 broadcast images of crowds of protesters storming the Prime Minister's official residence in the capital Dhaka, waving at television cameras in a gesture of celebration.

A source close to the Bangladeshi leader told AFP that Ms Hasina and her sister had left Ganabhaban (the prime minister's official residence) for a safer place. Ms Hasina wanted to record her resignation speech but "she did not get the chance to do so".

Ms Hasina's destination is still unclear, however, local sources said that the flight carrying her landed at Hindon air base near the Indian capital Delhi to refuel on its way to London, England. Indian officials have not confirmed this information.

Local media reported that Ms. Hasina arrived in India on a Bangladesh Air Force C-130. An officer said that police had tightened security outside Indira Gandhi International Airport in case Ms. Hasina landed in the capital, Delhi.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport has announced its closure from 4:45 p.m. (local time).

In India, a spokesman for the country's Railway Ministry said the country of a billion people in South Asia has suspended all rail services with Bangladesh amid the complicated situation in the neighboring country.

In January this year, Ms. Hasina, 76 years old, continued to serve as Prime Minister of Bangladesh for a fourth consecutive five-year term, after her ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) party won a resounding victory in the general election.

Protests in Bangladesh began in July, led by student groups against job quotas for civil servants. They have since escalated into an anti-government movement, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after 15 years in power.

On August 4, the Bangladeshi government declared an indefinite nationwide curfew, starting at 6 p.m., due to protests that turned violent on that day, killing nearly 100 people.
