Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long received Mr. Olivier Brochet, French Ambassador and leaders of the French Electricity Corporation (EDF).

On the afternoon of March 31, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long had a working session with Mr. Olivier Brochet, French Ambassador to Vietnam and leaders of the French Electricity Group (EDF).

Attending the meeting, on the Vietnamese side, there were Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long and representatives of the Electricity Authority, the Department of Foreign Market Development, the Institute of Energy, Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), and the National Energy Industry Group (PVN).

On the French side, there were French Ambassador to Vietnam Olivier Brochet, Mr. Karim Bregui, Country Director of EDF Vietnam and the Board of Directors of EDF Group in charge of the pumped storage hydropower project in Laos.

On behalf of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long expressed his joy and welcomed Mr. Olivier Brochet and the leaders of EDF Group to work at the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long affirmed that Vietnam and France have a long-standing traditional relationship, and both sides share the desire to consolidate and strengthen the Vietnam - France strategic partnership, continuously developing in all fields, especially energy.

Speaking at the meeting, French Ambassador to Vietnam Olivier Brochet expressed his hope that the two sides would continue to promote comprehensive cooperation, including in the energy sector. On this occasion, the Ambassador and leaders of EDF Group introduced to the Ministry of Industry and Trade the MOFAI Nam Theun pumped storage hydropower plant project in Laos and proposed cooperation opportunities to export electricity from the MOFAI plant to Vietnam.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long highly appreciated the projects of EDF Group, not only in Vietnam but also in other countries in the region in the field of green energy. The Deputy Minister suggested that EDF Group continue to work with relevant agencies to study and specifically assess the need to use electricity from the MOFAI plant in Vietnam. Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long said that in the coming time, Vietnam will step up the planning and development of pumped storage hydropower projects in Vietnam, and at the same time, the Deputy Minister suggested that EDF coordinate with relevant agencies to study the possibility of investing in these projects.

At the meeting, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long and Mr. Olivier Brochet also discussed directions to promote cooperation in the civil nuclear field. The Deputy Minister suggested that French energy corporations such as EDF increase exchanges with EVN and PVN in researching cooperation in technology, nuclear safety and security, and training human resources for future nuclear power projects in Vietnam.
