Ambassador Uladzimir Baravikou and Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long took the time to review the difficulties and advantages in developing economic and trade relations between the two countries in recent times. Both sides agreed that Vietnam and Belarus are two countries with complementary economies, however, currently the economic and trade cooperation between the two countries is still quite modest, not commensurate with the potential of the two countries.
The Intergovernmental Commission between the two countries, co-chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus and the Minister of Industry and Trade of Vietnam, is a traditional and effective cooperation mechanism that has been maintained for many years. The parties are actively implementing the contents agreed upon in the Minutes of the 15th Session of the Intergovernmental Commission (held on March 23, 2022) and have initially achieved certain results. The two sides agreed to focus on building content in preparation for the 16th session scheduled to take place in 2024.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoan Long and the Ambassador of Belarus both agreed that the field of cooperation in the automobile industry is a key area in the Vietnam - Belarus cooperation, in which the automobile manufacturing and assembly plant of the MAZ Joint Venture (now GMA Auto Industry) is considered a typical cooperation between the two countries. In the implementation process, any problems that arise will be resolved by the two sides, supporting the Joint Venture to operate smoothly. In the field of agriculture, the Belarusian side hopes that Vietnam will create favorable conditions to open the market for meat products (beef, pork, poultry).
At the end of the meeting, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long affirmed that the Ministry of Industry and Trade will continue to closely coordinate with the Belarusian Embassy in promoting Vietnam-Belarus trade and industrial relations, especially carefully preparing the content for the 16th Session of the UBLCP co-chaired by Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien and Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus in the second half of 2024 in Minsk, Belarus.
According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, the total bilateral trade turnover between Vietnam and Belarus in 2023 reached 65.3 million USD (down 42.6% compared to 2022), of which exports from Vietnam to Belarus reached 24.1 million USD (up 15.4%), imports from Belarus to Vietnam reached 41.2 million USD (down 55.6%). Export items from Vietnam to Belarus are still traditional items, including: seafood, raw plastics, machinery, equipment, tools, spare parts, computers, electronic products and components and other goods. Regarding imports from Belarus to Vietnam, the main items include fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, milk and dairy products, auto parts and components, machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts and other goods. Of which, fertilizers always account for a high proportion of import output from Belarus. Regarding investment, as of the first quarter of 2024, Belarus has 3 investment projects in Vietnam with a total investment capital of 32.25 million USD, ranking 68th out of 145 countries and territories with direct investment capital in Vietnam. |
