Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan advised that each person must be responsible for their own health, each person needs to follow a scientific diet and exercise properly.
At the 2nd Vietnam Community Nutrition Day organized by the Health and Life newspaper at Tao Dan Park in Ho Chi Minh City, Professor Dr. Tran Van Thuan - Deputy Minister of Health - said that according to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), there are currently more than 1 billion people suffering from obesity.
This situation is increasing rapidly on a global scale and without effective preventive solutions, by 2035, the world will have about 1.9 billion people living with obesity. This leads to many consequences for health, quality of life, as well as increased pressure on the health system.
In Vietnam, according to information from the Institute of Nutrition (Ministry of Health), the rate of overweight and obesity and chronic non-communicable diseases related to overweight and obesity is increasing rapidly.
Specifically, the obesity rate in Vietnam has more than doubled in the past 10 years, from 8.5% in 2010 to 19.0% in 2020. In particular, in large cities, overweight and obesity in school children are very high.
For example, in Ho Chi Minh City, the rate of overweight and obesity is over 50% and in Hanoi over 41%, according to 2020 statistics.
Overweight and obese people are 5-7 times more likely to develop non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, etc. than people with a standard body mass index.
In this context, the Government and the Ministry of Health, as well as central and local agencies, are striving to realize the goal of ensuring that all people have fair and reasonable access to nutrition and food. The goal is to achieve optimal nutrition, contribute to improving health, and encourage people to have appropriate health training methods.
According to Deputy Minister Thuan, practicing scientific nutrition and reasonable exercise to improve personal health contributes to creating a healthy community. This is not only valuable for each individual but also plays a very important role in disease prevention, improving the stature of Vietnamese people and helping to reduce pressure on the health system.
"The Ministry of Health calls on people to continue to practice scientific nutrition and reasonable exercise. Exercise does not have to be at a specific time, it can be in the morning, during breaks, or in the evening and we can exercise every day. We can jog, walk, practice yoga or any other exercise according to our preferences and conditions, as long as we exercise every day. And day by day, we will gradually see positive changes in our bodies" - Deputy Minister Thuan called on behalf of the Ministry of Health.
Also at this nutrition festival, there are 10 consulting booths for doctors and nutritionists to examine and advise people for free.
Be responsible for your own health
The Deputy Minister of Health emphasized that from the perspective of each citizen, each person also needs to be responsible for taking care of themselves and improving their physical and mental health for themselves and their families.
"For each person to be healthy means the whole country to be healthy, as President Ho Chi Minh called on all people to participate in physical exercise and improve their health" - the Deputy Minister of Health emphasized.
