On the afternoon of February 26, a working delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development led by Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien, Deputy Head of the National Steering Committee on Combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUU) had a working session with the Provincial Party Committee Standing Committee on combating IUU fishing.

According to the Provincial Steering Committee on Combating IUU Fishing, Phu Yen currently has 3,090 fishing vessels registered on the national fisheries database system, of which 681 vessels are 15m or longer in length. The number of fishing vessels that have installed a voyage monitoring device (VMS) as prescribed is 672/681 vessels, while 9 vessels have not installed a VMS device (damaged vessels, docked and just granted a registration certificate).

In recent times, Phu Yen has drastically and focused on solutions to combat IUU fishing, implementing recommendations of the European Commission (EC), focusing on tasks such as coordinating the handling of fishing vessels that violate VMS connection loss, exceeding permitted boundaries at sea, and thoroughly handling "3 no" fishing vessels according to the direction of the Prime Minister. The province has also controlled 100% of fishing vessels entering and leaving ports; closely monitored the output and composition of aquatic species through designated fishing ports in the province. From October 2023 to February 24, 2025, 95 cases were fined with a total amount of more than 940 million VND, for acts such as not registering fishing vessels, not having a captain's certificate, crew members on board not being listed in the crew register... From 2019 to present, Phu Yen fishing vessels have not been arrested or handled for violating foreign fishing waters.

At the meeting, members of the working group of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development discussed and pointed out a number of existing issues and shortcomings in the fight against IUU fishing in Phu Yen. At the same time, they requested Phu Yen province to promptly supplement and overcome these shortcomings before the EC inspection team will come to Vietnam for the 5th inspection...

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien requested the Standing Committee of Phu Yen Provincial Party Committee to continue to focus on leading and directing the implementation of the task of combating IUU fishing, resolutely and strictly handling the responsibilities of organizations and individuals who do not fulfill their assigned tasks, assist and condone IUU fishing, affecting the common efforts to remove the yellow card warning of the whole country. Phu Yen also urgently overcome shortcomings and deficiencies, complete registration, inspection, licensing of aquatic products, fully update the national fisheries database; strictly implement regulations on controlling fishing vessels entering and leaving ports, closely monitor output through ports; strictly handle violations of IUU fishing...
Previously, Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien and the working delegation inspected the fight against IUU fishing and the implementation of EC recommendations at designated fishing ports in the province.
