Principal Nguyen Minh Quy believes that in just a few days, the habit of attending extra classes will have to stop. Although there may be disappointment and confusion, this is also an opportunity for students to rediscover their inner strength through self-learning.
The new circular on tutoring and supplementary classes issued by the Ministry of Education and Training is attracting the attention of students, teachers, and parents... Before Circular 29 takes effect, understanding the disappointment, confusion, and even difficulties regarding the upcoming changes, Mr. Nguyen Minh Quy, Principal of Mac Dinh Chi High School ( Hai Phong ), wrote an open letter to the teachers and students of the school.
Speaking to VietNamNet , Mr. Quy said that students have always been accustomed to teachers reviewing, reinforcing, and guiding them through extra tutoring sessions. Therefore, stopping extra tutoring at school will cause anxiety and worry for the vast majority of students, especially those in their final year.
For teachers, this change also has many impacts. Now, teachers will have a harder time because students haven't yet developed the habit of self-study. In addition, teachers will also face more difficulties because their income has decreased significantly. "This will be a challenge for teachers," Mr. Quy said.
However, according to this principal, Vietnamese education is undergoing significant changes to avoid falling behind and to catch up with global educational trends.
"Many practices from the past, such as extra tutoring, the obsession with academic degrees, etc., which were ingrained, are now gradually shifting towards a more substantive, effective, and efficient approach. Therefore, a change in mindset and comprehensive reform from the root are necessary, even though all reforms are difficult, especially those related to the lives of teachers and the academic success of students as the final year approaches."
In his letter to the students, Mr. Quy also emphasized the importance of self-study. He stated that stopping extra tutoring provides an opportunity for them to become familiar with this skill. This will be a tremendous source of strength, helping students confidently face challenges and succeed in the future.

VietNamNet would like to quote the letter from teacher Nguyen Minh Quy to teachers and students:
Dear students!
Life is a long journey filled with challenges and opportunities. On this journey, learning is not simply about acquiring knowledge, but also about self-improvement. Teachers are dedicated companions, inspiring students with knowledge and guiding them on their path to maturity.
However, the pressures of exams, academic achievement, and family expectations have led many students to seek tutoring from teachers from a young age, and their academic results gradually become dependent on attending such tutoring sessions. This prevents the development of self-study skills, or if they do develop, they are gradually forgotten.
In just a few days, the habit of "extra tutoring" will have to stop. There will undoubtedly be feelings of disappointment, confusion, and even significant difficulties. However, this is also an opportunity for students to rediscover their inner strength: the spirit of self-learning. Initially, self-learning may be difficult, tiring, and ineffective. But with practice and practice, it will become a tremendous source of strength, helping them confidently face challenges and succeed in the future.
Self-learning is not just a skill, but also a foundation for developing three important qualities:
First, self-confidence – the key to success : In class, everything is meticulously prepared by the teachers. Extra tutoring helps students follow the established path at a leisurely pace. But now, each student must steer their own ship. Believe that you will find suitable learning resources, systematize your knowledge, and find the solutions yourself. Believe in yourself. Don't be afraid of failure, because each setback is a valuable lesson that will help you grow.
Secondly , self-discipline – the guiding light of learning : Self-discipline means that students proactively study without needing reminders. It's the ability to manage time, seek out new knowledge, master technology to access information, and persevere towards their goals. Self-discipline not only helps students learn better but also cultivates a sense of responsibility – a crucial element for success in life.
Thirdly , self-reliance – Steadfast steps in the face of challenges : Self-reliance helps students control their thoughts, emotions, and actions. A self-reliant person will not be swept away by negative influences from friends or social media. When studying independently, one may feel sleepy, tired, or discouraged, but if students know how to adjust themselves and persevere with their goals, success will come. Self-reliance gives us independence and a strong will. Independence enables us to solve problems without depending on others. Previously, difficult problems could be solved by waiting for teachers to explain them again during extra lessons; now, students must find solutions themselves. Independence helps students mature and become more resilient on their path forward.
Remember, no matter how difficult things get, your teachers will always be there to guide and help you when needed. But be confident to overcome anxiety, self-disciplined and independent so you don't lose yourself, and self-reliant to maintain a strong will. You can connect and help each other in your studies. Each individual in a group with shared goals will be empowered, and you will all be strong together. Thus, when you conquer the spirit of self-learning, you will discover your own limitless potential.
Dear teachers!
It won't be easy without tutoring. Life and work will certainly be difficult and challenging. Difficult because many of our students haven't yet developed the habit of self-study and need time to form it. And in those situations, teaching becomes more exhausting than ever. Difficult because teachers' incomes have decreased significantly. Previously, many teachers used breaks and mealtimes to tutor students, helping them improve while also ensuring their personal livelihoods. Now, this change poses a major challenge for each teacher.
I understand that teaching has never been easy, and tutoring is even more so. Each teacher has truly worked hard and received what they deserve – including patience, perseverance, encouragement, and care for their students, qualities that the term "tutoring" itself can never fully express. But today, we continue to be role models, demonstrating adaptability and determination. Even without tutoring, we are still ready to answer questions and provide support, either in person or online, whenever possible. We also need more time to take care of ourselves, our families, and to further hone our skills.
I want to send my colleagues my understanding and support. Let's always be a united team, overcoming all difficulties together. We are not alone on this journey. Let's overcome challenges together, so that teaching is not just about patience and hardship, but also about pride, serenity, and nobility.
The Ministry of Education and Training held a dialogue with VietNamNet readers regarding Circular 29 on tutoring and supplementary classes.
Parents breathe a sigh of relief, anxiously awaiting the new regulations on tutoring to take effect.
