(Dan Tri) - Nguyen Minh Anh, the valedictorian of the 10th grade exam in Ho Chi Minh City, said it only took him 5 minutes to finish the English exam and get a perfect score.
Practice skills, don't memorize With a perfect score of 10 in 2 subjects: Math and English, Literature with 8.75 points, Nguyen Minh Anh, a student of Tran Quang Khai Secondary School (Tan Phu District) became the valedictorian of the 10th grade exam in 2024 in Ho Chi Minh City. Minh Anh said: "I am very happy but not surprised with the above score, because after seeing the official answers for the subjects announced, I basically knew the results. I just didn't think I would be the valedictorian." Nguyen Minh Anh, valedictorian of grade 10 in Ho Chi Minh City in 2024 (Photo: Character provided). Talking about the exam, Minh Anh revealed that it only took her 5 minutes to do the English test with 40 questions. In addition, she spent another 5 minutes checking it again, and 50 minutes waiting to submit her paper. "First, this year's English test did not have many puzzles. Second, the test was mainly in multiple choice format, so it was very quick. English is also a subject I have practiced since elementary school, so I did not have difficulty with any of the questions," Minh Anh said. The female valedictorian expressed that to practice her foreign language skills, she often reads English versions of foreign classics. In addition, Minh Anh tried her hand at the B2 foreign language certificate (according to the 6-level foreign language proficiency framework for Vietnam) and achieved good results. When asked about the secret to getting 10 points in math with a test that was considered strange and difficult, making many candidates cry, the female valedictorian said that the secret was practicing logical thinking skills and reflexes. "The math questions are very broad so I can't memorize them. During the study process, I try to research and study practical math problems to improve my thinking. In the exam room, I stay calm, think about the problem in the simplest way, and connect the content of the question with reality so that I can do it," said a student at Tran Quang Khai Secondary School. At the same time, Minh Anh has a firm grasp of basic knowledge to find the right solution. In literature, with a similar learning method, Minh Anh only memorizes the author and work information because if she doesn't memorize this information, she won't be able to write it herself, while the feelings and comments will be written according to her emotions. The female student allocates time reasonably for the three parts, limiting the situation of "the elephant's head and the mouse's tail". "Students often choose to memorize, so it's difficult to balance all three subjects. Personally, I don't choose this method. I focus more on practicing my test-taking skills," said Minh Anh. During her studies in class, the female student pays attention to the teachers explaining different methods of doing exercises. In addition, the female student studies math and English outside. In her free time, she buys reference materials such as math books and problem-solving books to study and practice more. "I don't stay up late or wake up too early to stay healthy and mentally comfortable. Every day, I try to go to bed around 10pm," Minh Anh said. Dream of becoming a doctor After 4 years at Tran Quang Khai Secondary School, Minh Anh achieved an average score of 9.7. Not only that, she also received the 3rd prize for excellent students at the city level in biology in grade 9, and the Violympic prize at the city level in math in grade 6. The female student placed her first choice at Nguyen Thuong Hien High School, followed by Tran Phu and Le Trong Tan. The female student did not take the specialized exam because she found it unnecessary. "I have a dream of becoming a doctor, so I invest and focus on three subjects: math, chemistry, and biology. I hope that in the future I will pass the medical entrance exam and study for a doctorate," Nguyen Minh Anh confided. Minh Anh's mother, a lecturer at the University of Industry and Trade, has also accompanied her child in the learning process. According to the female lecturer, in natural subjects, parents should guide their children to master basic knowledge, then study advanced lessons, study slowly but surely, and absolutely do not memorize. In social subjects, children need to have a firm grasp of basic knowledge, the important thing is to understand and apply it. "Parents will encourage and remind, but the most important thing is that children study hard and set specific plans for themselves," said Minh Anh's mother.
