Huu Dang is the first valedictorian in the past 20 years of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City to choose Philosophy.
Le Huu Dang is a former student of Nguyen Van Thoai High School, An Giang. In the 2023 high school graduation exam, the male student scored 9.25 points in Literature, 10 points in History and 9.75 points in Geography. In total, Dang scored 29 points in the C00 group.
When he received the news that he was the valedictorian of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Ho Chi Minh City, Dang was surprised and only told his family the good news near the enrollment date.
Dr. Pham Tan Ha, Vice Principal of the school, said this is the first time in 20 years that the school's top student is a Philosophy student.
While talking, many people wondered or felt regretful when they learned that he had a high score on the exam but only chose one choice: Philosophy. However, when meeting the Philosophy teachers and classmates, the male student felt that he had chosen the right environment to practice and develop his passion.
"I met many friends from many different regions, with many different styles and colors, but with the same interest in learning about Philosophy. Living independently in the dormitory also gave me new experiences," Dang said.

The opportunity that led Dang to his passion for Philosophy began in middle school. From stories about the journey to find a way to save the country and the revolutionary path that President Ho Chi Minh chose, the male student read more about the lives of Karl Marx, Engels, and Lenin. The more he read, the more interested he became. In 10th grade, Dang went online to download some documents and textbooks on Philosophy to learn more. The male student read Lenin's Theses on Socialism and The State. From there, the male student realized that Philosophy helps solve many problems in life and is the foundation for learning other sciences.
The border student gave an example of the cause-effect category in Philosophy that can help him realize the process of trying hard in studying, having to make efforts and struggle for a long time to get sweet results. Or the law of unity and struggle between opposites helps him have the motivation to learn more about deeper knowledge.
In addition to books and documents on Philosophy, the male student also reads historical documents not in textbooks, watches Youtube about world wars and learns multi-dimensional perspectives on history.
Dang was teased by many friends as "old man", "heavenly person" when they saw him reading dry and difficult to understand Philosophy documents. By grade 11, Huu Dang had planned to take the entrance exam for Philosophy at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Ho Chi Minh City. When knowing Dang's choice, many friends, teachers, and acquaintances wondered "why take this exam", "what will you do after studying Philosophy?"
"I just explained that this is a subject that I have studied for years, really love and feel is suitable. Luckily, both my parents support me in doing what I love," the male student shared.
Once he had a goal, during the summer from grade 11 to grade 12, he studied the basic knowledge of the three subjects Literature, History, and Geography in the textbooks to grasp the knowledge firmly and read more extended documents. Around February is the time for male students to practice solving previous years' exam questions to grasp the format and correct errors, supplementing missing knowledge.
According to Dang, to get a high score in block C00, the key is still to master the knowledge of the textbooks, from there find more related documents to do well on application questions. This also helps students maintain their passion when studying Literature, History, and Geography.
After referring to the benchmark scores of previous years of Philosophy, Dang determined that his academic ability would definitely allow him to pass this major, so he only filled in one application.

Knowing the story, Ms. Le Ngoc Diep, the homeroom teacher of grade 12, advised Dang to register a few more wishes just in case, but Dang confidently said, "Don't worry, you will definitely pass."
Ms. Diep said the teachers at school were surprised when Dang registered for Philosophy. Partly because he was a good student and had many better options, and partly because it was rare for students to choose this major. After hearing him explain that this was his passion and that he had researched it thoroughly, the teachers were all supportive.
In particular, the male student was very modest. When friends and teachers asked about the university entrance exam results, Dang only reported that he had passed the exam, not revealing that he was the valedictorian of the Faculty of Humanities. Only later did the whole class find out.
Sharing his first days of getting used to the university environment and his new life in a big city, which was more favorable than he had imagined. The An Giang student was given advice from many seniors on experience and "survival tips" at university, such as new study and note-taking methods, lifestyle, and financial management while away from home.
"I aim to accumulate good knowledge and skills to be able to teach and research theories," the male student said.
